Well, I usually have a full colour approach on each icon I try to work on, even if I know there will be sepia at the end, because I find that the colouring, curving, levels layers you add to enhance the colouring set a better range of depth, at least for me, than to just go straight sepia after setting the right levels.
I usually add a black and white Gradient Map over my icon and then either create a new layer or go to layer -> new fill layer -> solid colour and then set a colour in the yellow-brown-red range to my liking and set it mostly to Color, sometimes to Screen and adjust the opacity according to my taste.
As for Lighting I mostly use soft light textures, which can both enhance colouring and add lights to your icons. I use them on Screen for adding lighting and if I don't want plus colours I usually desaturate the texture, so only the light effects become visible. But the gradient and gradient map tool are also your friend!
