i just read 1984. yes that's correct i did not read it in high school. perhaps because my english teachers liked socialism more than Orwell. :) liberal conspiracy theories aside - it screwed me up. then i listened to darlene zschech + choir + brass + band sing worship songs. and i started to think maybe orwell hated christianity or religion in

I hear you on the Christianity/Socialism parallel thing. Orwell's worldview is not familiar territory for me (at least, not at a quarter to four, Ante Meridiem), but I don't fancy that his main goal was to attack those of us who claim that Jesus had more going for him than good morals. As I recall, he seemed to be taking issue with communism as the nightmarish consequence of socialism. To me, Christianity is socialist in its (hopefully) homogeneous estimation of the worth of each practitioner, regardless of background or demographic. second.. i think orwell would not have diluted his focus by aiming at socialism and Christianity at the same time. i don't know if socialism must end up where he put it - but the ideas about how the Party perpetuates itself were both feasible and chilling. Which was the point. So i guess i feel better about it a bit, having written about it.. i don't feel as .. cornered, as conservative, as attacked.
i was particularly pissed that it didn't end how i wanted. not only did they get arrested (and orwell did a good job of getting me to hope against knowledge that they could escape, as they did), but they betrayed each other. finally and fully. they couldn't just get killed in love, they had to get changed first.
third, i love how your Hobbes icon casts a thoughtful look at my writings. :)
