OK I know dog-all about re-incarnation (although I do know you now need a permit). If they can be reborn as a heavely being (Hakkai and Gojyo) but Sanzo and Goku are free of the cycle is that something else entirely. Like they skip the heavenly being stage?

According to the various explanations I was taught, it has something to do with 6 levels which you can be born into. Gods and humans are just two of those levels, along with animals, ghosts, etc. I'm not sure how it would work for youkai, but humans are the only beings of those six that can reach enlightenment.

These are (basically) the rewards that were given to the original Tripitaka and his companions in the Chinese Hsiyuchi novel. Sun Wu'kung (Goku), being not really any of those 6, would attain enlightenment upon death. (Though in the novel, he lived for 1500 years!)

There are different interpretations of enlightenment depending on which school of thought you follow. I personally go with the Theravada version, where there's not really a heaven or paradise or anything, where the collection of things that make up "you" cease to exist.

So if Gojyo and Hakkai can return as heavenly being they are a step further from enlightenment? or are they a step closer in the idea of the story?

Well, it was giving them the option of doing so, but it also depends on the deeds they perform in the rest of their current lives. You can be a step closer to enlightenment in another form than you were in the past form, but it may take another few lives. It may take hundreds of times before you finally get it.

Gojyo's probably going to be unwilling to become enlightened on purpose and corrupt all future forms of Sanzo so they keep getting together. ^^

When it comes to this two I always wanted it to be a never ending story no matter how long and whatever happens. Nice piece you got here.
