Such a tree would have to be purely volunteer, or you're right, people would feel coerced. That would be no good to anyone.

I think that's a pretty good idea, especially if strictly voluntary. The resources the people of SFWA (and heck, associated groups like the RWA, HWA, SFPWA....) have to offer can be astounding. (And amazing, and fantastic and... ow, ow, I'll stop now).

Especially as you mentioned, things like crash space, legal help, etc.

I like it.

I am still waiting to hear back. It could be that a voice with more clout than mine carries (that would not be hard) needs to raise--meanwhile, glad it seems an idea worth pursuing!
