Mother's day approaches

I was cleaning the kitchen last night while someone else was on the phone with their mother. The TV had been muted for once, so all I heard was "inanity . . .inanity . . . each time the question is answered should sound like the first time.

I'm painfully, and way too slowly, learning the same lesson with my mom, with whom I live 24/7 and who is experiencing memory issues (but not seriously yet). I thought I was a very kind and patient person until it was put to the test, so now I'm trying so much harder. It's difficult, though. Very difficult. When a parent becomes the child, and the child becomes the parent... :(

I remember seeing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with the scene where Steve Rogers goes to visit the very old Peggy Carter, and they talk with each other-and then she starts coughing, and looks away, and when she looks up she says, "Steve!" in tones of surprise. And he carries on with the conversation, totally calmly, in a way that shows he's done this before. I thought that was perhaps the most heroic thing I'd ever seen him do, and one that showed what a basically decent human being this version of the character is. It didn't do any of the things that I suppose a lot of people watch superhero films for, but I was glad they put it there; it gave me a greater depth of sympathy for him ( ... )

I didn't see Captain America, but I suspect one day I will. That does sound quite heroic to me.

That is kind, but I am the world's biggest coward. There's no bravery involved in these situations, or at least none that I see, but oh, a myriad of other emotions, yes.
