Ah, yes -- when the characters use dated science, that's just their being people of their time. But when the narrative voice uses dated science, it reminds us that we're reading a book written at a particular time.

I had a mention of phrenology (as well as using the old term "mesmerism" for hypnosis) in the end of Grandmaster's Gambit, but it was in dialog, and with a bit of irony.
