Indie Roundup

Summer reading in fantasy and space opera, by indie authors I've enjoyed.

Star Nomad, by Lindsay Buroker. Buroker has written a number of "kitchen sink" fantasies that I enjoyed--colorful characters, lots of humor and action. She's a natural for space opera. Don't seek these out for skiffy sophistication. These are space operas, the story taking ( Read more... )

Draven, like most other romance writers that mix in fantasy, cuts the conflict short and leaves the reader with no doubt things will get tied up nicely for the couple. But she builds such wonderful worlds and characters that I wish the story would go on a little longer and the adventure be more complex. I'm excited for her to build up a portfolio of novels and wish she'd become as prolific as some of the romance novelists that churn out 4+ books a year!

True about Draven. Maybe with time she'll build complexity.

Thanks for the good word on my novel.

It's been a long, hard road to this point, and the years of rejection after rejection have trained my mind to expect failure, which in turn has made it very hard to carry projects through to completion. Why finish if it'll only get yet another round of rejections in a folder in that big filing cabinet?

I'm just hoping that if I can start seeing some real success on my indie efforts, my mind will finally be willing to pour forth the words again instead of constantly jamming up with the anticipation of failure.

That is something a lot of us have to face, and it is tough. My only answer is to keep learning to improve, to rewrite, polish, and to learn how to do the fiddly stuff in self pub that is so necessary to catch the reader's eye when there is so much out there.

So much goodness! I'm very much looking forward to reading Blair's book. Right now I'm beta reading something for a friend, but when I get done with that, one indie book I'm going to be reading is Chalcedony, by Constance Burris. She was at Sirens last year! It's the second in a projected trilogy--the first was Coal, which I reviewed here.
