When you have a very, very tiny garden, you take your joy where you can get it. Like my little lily patch, which I have been nursing along for fifteen years:
The truth is, I'm a terrible gardener. Some good soil added in once a year (it's sandy here, so close to the beach) and some fertilizer stuff, and remember watering, and that's about it.
The only plants that make it are ones I can plant and they pretty much take care of themselves.
I did have a beautiful lemon tree going that I was proud of--it was giving us delicious lemons every early January and late June--but the roof rats killed it.
Boo about the lemon tree - what a pity. I'm very much a 'fend for yourselves' gardener. The other day I had a packet of lupins that had five steps of instructions detailing exactly how to soak, sow, cover with soil, keep them at certain temperatures for x days... I soaked them in warm water, threw them out, and threw some compost over them. They'll grow or not. We'll see.
