While I was in Madrid, for the first time I saw ducks flying south for winter, in the classic V-skein formation. The sound of their wings is quite extraordinary, this weird, whistling noise, very loud overhead.

I don't think our ducks do that. The ones who are amazing are the geese, in their V formation and quacking constantly.

Perhaps they were geese, then. It was hard to tell from below; they were flying quite high. My hosts, when asked, looked blank and said "errm...some kind of fowl..."

Is the pond yours or is it a public pond? It's a nice thing to have, either way.

It's a water feature behind the condos. The sidewalk goes right behind our tiny patio.

Could be geese, but I'm not good at birding--my eyesight is too bad.

Flying ducks always look to me like bowling pins with wings.

They really are a cheerful sight. And if the ducks are around, then the coyotes aren't, which is also good.

Thanks! Yeah, dawn was just barely happening. Unfortunately we don't have many trees, but these two have survived the committee that wants everything cement.
