I was talking to a friend who summarized her Worldcon experience, and one thing she overheard was discussion about how the future of publishing is trending more toward direct-to-consumer. Who does the labor--yes: there are so many parts, and all of them benefit from as much professionalism as possible, but most of us can't manage to do all aspects professionally ourselves, and *paying* for professional services becomes--or is from the start--unfeasible.

I was talking with someone from Corbis about how much it would cost to use a particular image--and the prices she was quoting would be one thing for Megabucks Bigpublisher, but for Sole Individual me, they're another matter--even when she was willing to throw in a discount.

Yes. Cover art has been a big bottleneck, though we're getting savvier. I've been slowly replacing my crappy "art" work, done because at the time it seemed that any old cover slapped on would be okay. No longer.

Now I go around with camera at hand, trying to build shots in mind--ones that will be easy for one of our cover team to add lettering to. (I also downloaded Art2 app, but it's so powerful I cannot make heads or tails of it. I need tutorials.)
