Oooh, I wish I'd known. And, I didn't know about the store either. Must check it out.

Yes yes! Do! It's great to have an indie store, especially a genre one, in our own (rather large) backyard. But that means supporting it.

I went to see Jo read at Borderlands last weekend for the same reason (aside from the fact that I like her a lot): hearing Among Others in its native accent, as it were, is wonderful. It's such a splendid book.

Yes! And the question and answer part afterward was excellent.

Easy to the 405? Good for you, but I'd been hoping it'd be within easy walking distance of the ocean, which I know Jo wanted to see. Apparently it isn't. I hope she got to see it from the train along the central coast.

No--unfortunately, not knowing the lay of the land, she tried to get to the ocean that day, and ended up in Long Beach. (If only I'd known, they were relatively close!)

But I hope they make it today.

and yeah--the Coast Starlight cruises along the shoreline for miles, but I gather that the train did that bit during the night.

I don't have a 'voice' of the narrator in my head (like Mark Twain's accent or such) BUT I have recently had audiobooks carry over into my reading of the books. I commute over an hour a day, so I've been grabbing audiobooks of books I've read so I can 'reread' them before the next on in the series comes out and get up to speed on it. Then when I do get to the next book, I suddenly find that I have the audiobook narrator going full speed with accents and such. Most notable is Cassie Clare's Clockwork Angel (read by Jennifer Ehle) - I picked up the second book and BAM, I had all the dramatic pauses, inflections, accents, etc going on. Quite fun, actually! And it really brought out a lot more of the humor of the book and made it much more vibrant than the characters had been in my initial reading of the first book. Which proves that there are some books that definitely ARE better read aloud.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that aspect of audio books--that's fascinating!

I figured you'd enjoy that - I know it's a bit of a tangent but I found it rather interesting! not to mention livens up my reading of a fun but not over the top fabulous book (probably because I'm not the target audience teen ;) )

I KNOW! But that's what I hear. It makes no more sense than hearing Dame Maggie Smith read Greer's books.
