I loved reading this history, actually, and I think people at all stages of their careers can both be sobered and yet take heart from this--I do, anyway: you guys kept trying, kept finding different ways to move the story toward its audience, and here you are.
Tangentially, I was really interested in what you said about studying Lymond to see how Dorothy Dunnett makes him mysterious. I've just started doing that: thinking consciously about what writers are doing to make a story, or some element of a story, really *work*. It's a unique and fun way of enjoying the story (as well as being educational).
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed reading the first book -- I didn't go further because even though I had the third and the fourth or fifth somewhere, I could never find the second! -- and I am very much looking forward to reading the rewrite! Thank you for continuing to work on this excellent series. ^_^
Your "screed" was fascinating! I was immediately struck by a desire to see it reach a wider audience. You have encapsulated the history of SF in film and print for the past 35 years, from a different POV than we usually get. You are simultaneously an insider and an outsider, the woman men don't see at scriptwriters' conferences. And how appropriate that you're now publishing electronically, as the work follows the evolution of book publication.
I'm serious: the academic SF community needs to know this history.
