A springtime riff about impossible things.

What impossible things did you want as a kid?

wish fulfillment, behavior, kids

I really desperately wanted to fly. I'm so grateful for being able to do it in dreams, at least.

I wanted to talk to people (in real life) who didn't mind talking about books for hours on end. I kind of found that in a college class.

I wanted to walk on the moon - always loved the idea that your footprints last forever.

I wanted to gallop on a palomino horse next to the road and jump all the fences and side-roads.

I absolutely, desperately wanted to walk through a fog bank (did we read the same book, I wonder?) and end up in another world. When I was eight or nine, I dreamed that I walked through a wall of black mist and stepped out somewhere else. It was so vivid - I can still remember the cool moistness of the mist, and the way it swirled around me - that for years afterward I kept half-expecting to find it.

I also wanted to be telekinetic. It just seemed like a really fun power to have. I had very vivid, believable dreams about making coffee mugs and so forth slide across a table toward me.

As I mentioned riding back from horse camp, though, all my non-impossible dreams really did come true.

It's richly satisfying to count up how many non-impossible dreams have come true.

And re the fog bank, I bet we did.
