See coraa's post here and here for our trip so far (in other entries she's got excellent panel and roundtable notes); now we are at Writers' Horse Camp for several more days. Already Rachel and I have gotten two goals met, and I got another met. Cora's written most of a short story. Every time we come to Camp we get tons done, while having fun with ( Read more... )

That sounds like so much fun. One year, when my schedule and finances coincide, I will get myself to Sirens.

Sounds lovely! Safe space is the perfect description of how Sirens operates.

Sirens is rising very, very high on my list of cons I would like to go to - it sounds like all the good things stuffed into a tidy package with a bow on top.

And horsecamp, well, you know how I feel about the prospect of _that_....

I would love to see you get to go--I think you would be in heaven.

I'm working on the 'ability to go' thing. dancinghorse has been entertaining me with Lippitude for years, and it would be great to meet them all (and her!) in person.

I hope I'll eb able to get there one day. The attitude sounds amazing. I remember when I told a friend that Dragonlance started my interest in books in general and fantasy in particular, and that I still have great memories of it, along with over 80 books which I occasionally re-read, he snickered and derided me for reading bad fantasy. It sounds great to be in a place like that.

dragonlance has won a lot of readers to fantasy!

True, but to me, it's more than that, Sherwood. It is insulting to both the readers and the authors to say that dragonlance is 'bad fantasy', copied from LotR. The fact is, quality of books is mostly subjective to whether you personally like the book. There are very few books (mostly classics) which are considered 'high-quality' by most people. And even then, you can find people who say LotR, P&P and other classics are boring, low quality, etc.

Exactly. Every book is a klunker to someone. When I was young, Jane Austen was frivolous trash, as was most female written fiction. There was a list of work from dead white males that was supposed to be classics--and I note today that some of those are no longer on lists.
