Nebulas

I've been thinking about the recent uproar, and though not one single person (surprise!) has asked, "And what do you think, Sherwood Smith?" I wanted to say something, I guess in part because I was tangentially connected to some of the sparks that flew up from the long-glowing bed of embers, and partly because we are primates who congregate ( Read more... )

Only if you pay attention to the SFWA awards, you missed the latest round of arguments about changing the rules.

What rules were changed? I had no idea there was either an uproar or a rule change.

Nothing has changed, but CCfinlay fired a broadside about eligibility after his jury duty, and over on SFF.NET Rich Horton sighted his guns on the jury system: these are both vexed questions, causing a brief whirlwind of discussion.

I am just so grateful that that story doesn't end "And J was so discouraged that she took up basketweaving instead" or possibly "And J didn't get into dance school because she didn't have a lead on her resume."

Good story.

In those days UCLA was far easier to get into--but J's years of dance would look good on a resume. (And if she did tryouts--I don't remember any more--she would have been stunning.)

There's an uproar? I must live in a cave.

That's a great story, though. And how it does bring back high school.

You and I must both live in a cave!

All three of us live in that cave! It's getting crowded, but from what I hear mevennen is handy with getting bunnies into the stewpot, so at least we'll be well-fed...

I can make fires! Took me long enough to learn.

Wonderful anecdote. I'm glad J didn't let that disappointment discourage her. One can never tell with judges, whether it's for auditions or contests. Who knows what makes them pick one and pan another? I've given up trying to figure it out. I'm not hanging my dreams on winning anything. Just keep plugging away. If I can sell one book, maybe I can sell two. Etc.

(I also didn't know there was a controversy.)

There are a lot worse things in the world than a pat on the back. But brangling about it does kind of flyspot the rose.
