A Governess in the Age of Jane Austen, which is the diary and letters of Agnes Porter, a governess to the children of some of the Fox Strangway connections. She was extremely duty-oriented, but had a sense of humor. I marked a bunch of passages that illustrate life as it was then.

Surfing friendsfriends list, thank you so much for this! I will add it to my list of books to be acquired; it sounds fascinating, and her 'voice' is so readable and amusing. I love historical detail from first rather than second sources, and this looks wonderful for that too.

Plus I love the anecdote about the Irish gentleman, heee.
