Fave cheesy movie - Independence Day ftw

Oct 19, 2016 15:57

I (mostly) unironically love the movie Independence Day. It used to be one of Dragonfly and my comfort flicks, though nowadays we generally only rewatch it on July 4. I'd been warned that the sequel is terrible, but since the person who said that is the same person who mocks me for liking the first one, I ignored his advice and bought Resurgence on ( Read more... )

Aw, I haven't seen it in a while, but I managed to see it at the cinema (I drove there, first time after passing & my friend was very good about not being too nervous) and had a lot of fondness for it. I have the DVD, which I picked up second hand and am waiting for a bit more strength in me to have a properly enjoyable rewatch. I haven't seen the new one, though.

Writing in US fandoms can be intimidating (especially very US ones, in that they involve gov't - I always have to have my entire flist unBritsh my few attempts at West Wing fic) but at least it's not very hard to find kind US-pickers about the place.

My fave bit in ID4 is when they make contact with other countries' militaries with their way to defeat the aliens, and the posh British officer says 'It's about time! What do they plan to do?'

LOL and if it was a British film, we'd have a plan and be rolling our eyes at the US for expecting us all to sit around and wait for them, like they're the most important people on the planet, as ever. Heh.

aw, I don't remember where I saw it first. Probably at the cinema though, we do try to get to the ones that work best on the big screen.

I generally find it harder to 'hear' American/Canadian characters' voices in my head when I'm writing, whereas British ones are usually right there, because of my family's English background, I assume.

Then there's the alternate ending that will never get written, where the Australians save the world for a change :)

Then there's the alternate ending that will never get written, where the Australians save the world for a changeIt should happen someday - it's a lot more logical, really! I mean, the aliens sweep over the northern hemisphere and find time to go back for some of the southern hemisphere, and what gets missed out, same as ever? (They probably checked a US paper and concluded Australia was maybe mythical) and then they find their TERRIBLE MISTAKE afterwards when they get blown out of the sky by Australian and NZ ingenuity and heroism and whatever ( ... )

Ahahaha, no, we'd be terrible at it. We're too spread out, we're not at all militarily inclined as a population, none of us have guns, well except the actual military and there aren't many of them, plus, again, the vast distances, cut our communications and transport and we're doomed. Oh, and our government has a habit of buying shitty weapons that don't work off the US.

Apparently in ID4 the only Australian city actually destroyed was Perth, which is hilarious, cos we've got nothing :)

Do you remember what that 1960s show was called?

I legit love Independence Day, no irony or shame. I'd say it's a guilty pleasure movie but in reality there's no guilt there. It is awesome and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Ditto with the Mummy movies (at least the first two).

I've been fighting everyone about Armageddon for years. Once got resoundingly mocked at a con panel for sticking up for it.

N'aw, the Mummy films, haven't seen them in years. Evie was awesome :)

The Mummy films are great! (Well, the first two; I haven't tried the one without the proper Evie). I love them. :-)

I can't even remembered if I bothered to see the third one, wouldn't have been rushing to see it without Rachel Weisz.

ID4 was good, for the little I can remember.

I disliked Resurgence because of you-know-what. Apart from that, it was not as bad as the reviews said.

The fact that I went to see the movie for gay representation and all I got was Bury Your Gays. D:

I thought that's probably what you meant, but then, they also killed of Jasmine, the black female character, although she'd progressed from being a stripper to being a doctor in this movie, so yay!

I am embarrassed to admit that I didn't realise they were supposed to be a gay couple literally until they held hands. I am clearly spoiled (in a good way) for gay characters on my tv screens actually getting PDAs (great icon, btw)
