It's very sad in 2016 people are still writing about how something for boys is universal and girls is just for girls or somehow inferior. I do think books/toys have become more gendered in a way by the power of colouring toys/clothes/book covers pink. They never used to be so much pink stuff when I was a kid.

The home schooling thing is probably right, Chris Boucher, the script editor of Blake's 7, was ill as a child and read the romance stories in his Mum's women's magazines. I think he's a bit quirky anyway though.

A lot of British TV seems to be about immigration currently.

Some years ago our local libraries decided to shelve kids books under 'boys' and 'girls' and when I asked wtf, they explained that it was a marketing exercise to try and get boys to read more, i guess by separating out all the icky girlie books that apparently give boys cooties, whereas the girls shelves had the full range because girls can read about princesses AND pirates. They even had pink and blue signs. *sigh*

Good and bad issues associated with immigration?

It tends to be simplistic. The locals who hate immigrants/funny looking monsters are big racists and that's it really and there's one bad monster (yet to be seen) who makes the other monsters do bad stuff which makes them look evil as a whole. This appears to be the plot of 'Beowulf' so far.

Is that really the plot of Beowulf, wow! I was going to say that sounds like a reach, but then I realised i don't know what the original story was about, so.

I try, I really do, but what's one voice against all the rest of society? I think I'm pretty much just coming across as whiny ("the girl never gets anything useful to do!"), but at least maybe I'm raising awareness. I can hope.

Trying to explain to all the white guys at work that I am sick of everything being about them (more tactfully) - the guys with girl children are at least listening when I explain how important it's been for Bunny having tv shows/books with girls as main characters.
