To quote Dragonfly - 'this show is doing my head in'

It's taking us awhile to get through Downton Abbey because I was house sitting for 2.5 weeks, so wasn't home for much telly watching. But we're half way through season 4 now, and i have to say, I understand why people keep referring nostalgically to season one as the best. I have not caught the Downton Abbey bug, but my mum has. Which means I usually only see the Christmas episode when we're visiting her for the holidays. Which always results in me sitting there with my mouth hanging open thinking "Really?! Do you really want to do this for a Christmas episode?!"

Is it at all engaging if you don't know the characters?

Let's just say, it's never grabbed me enough that I've gone on to watch it of my own volition. Not that I think it's horrible. I just don't quite get the fuss. (It does make me nostalgic for Upstairs Downstairs, though. Go, Hudson! *g*)

Did you ever see the first few eps? Not that I'd try and persuade you - I don't usually get into soaps at all, idek what it is about this one. I think it's that I love how much the family retainers care about and for the family, and how the family protect and care about them in return.

I've never watched Upstairs Downstais, though my housemates occasionally reference it.

For some reason gut-wrenching misery and horror seems to a British Christmas TV tradition. All the soaps usually pull out all the murder/fire/disaster storylines for that time of year. Captive audience, I guess, so the more drama the better!

I have not experience this British soap tradition before - it's not something I want to get used to.
