Hee! I got that one. What I want to know is, if an officer in the navy were awaiting trial for treason, what conditions would they be kept in - prison, house arrest or given parole?

Some Local Prisons had contracts with the Army and Navy to hold soldiers and sailors awaiting sentence by courts-martial, the prisons were paid for this service.

Also - CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptance letter! *hugs*

But they might have a different procedure for officers - like a ship's captain for example.

Also, thank you! I'm terrified :)

If an officer in the navy were awaiting trial for treason, what conditions would they be kept in - a dungeon and chains etc, or would they be given parole? house arrest?

What sort of time period are you talking about?

If you're talking about Navy at sea, hell. *scratches chin* Probably incarcerated in the brig on board ship until you reached a big enough port. Then you'd more than likely be summerarily given trial before hanged.

Before this century, definitely NOT parole or house arrest. If you're a high ranking General/Admiral, then maybe. Not for normal officers.

I'd say just incarcerated, not in a dungeon, possibly in chains. If you're a higher officer, chains are doubtful, just a lower officer or midshipman, then more than likely.

If the brigit (brigat? big ship...) is further enough away from everywhere and an officer is found conspiring with persons on board or in a port, I reckon they'd simply be hanged. Punishment was very much fit over the top to the crime.

*cough* OK going over board here. (haha)

Conditions would be shitty.

Okay, say a ship's captain, but they've reached port, and are convening the courtmartial. He'd be taken from his ship and held where?
