Pointless, a book review rant

Mar 24, 2011 17:09

Alright, I'm going to be upfront. I read a book. I really, really did not like it, particularly I didn't like the end. If you do like this book, that doesn't mean I don't like you. It doesn't even necessarily mean I think you have bad taste. What it does mean is that you're taste is very different from mine, you have different priorities when ( Read more... )

I...I'm almost glad I lost my copy of the first book.

But then you could complain about it with me!

I HATE HER SISTER!!! She made me want to fucking punch things all the time. But anyway! I finished reading the third book recently and . . . the second book is really the worst one. I mean, none of them are particularly GOOD books, but the third, at least, made me laugh some.

Although, really, the only character I actually care about it Professor Lyall, and he doesn't show up nearly enough.

Professor Lyall is one of the only characters I like. He might not be a great character, but he's fun, and I actually want to know more about.

And the sister is VILE, but that's my problem with it. She's nothing but vile. She has no personality outside of being nasty and shallow, and that's just terrible writing.

Man, I wish I'd stopped at the second book like you. I agree or can't argue with every single complaint you mentioned, but figured maybe she just didn't know where to take the series after the first one and the third one will be better! The first book had potential goddamnit, and I don't give up on series easily.

...well in the sense of having a direction that isn't pure undiluted cliche, yes. In the sense of "I don't actively want to throw the book across the room", the third book actually managed to be worse.

I'm not sure if I'll try the third book or not. I mean, it's not like I have money to waste. The first book did have some potential! It could have gone somewhere fun. It did not.

Read the first book. Haven't been interested enough to read the others. Didn't love it or hate it, but it was adequate mindless reading. It made me laugh a couple times, and I liked Professor Lyall and Lord Akeldama b/c he's one of those cliches I like lol.

That was sort of my feeling on the first book. It wasn't awful. It wasn't really great. It was the kind of thing you read on the bus, because it's distracting enough to keep you involved, and not challenging enough to be frustrating when you're somewhere busy.

I wouldn't suggest reading more. Obviously.

Hmmm, yup. All of this is definitely true, though I went into the books not expecting much, so they entertained me for an evening. Weirdly, the third book introduced a female character I actually liked precisely because she did seem to have opinions and a personality (finally, one such female character in the books exists!). But even then, this character seemed to be in love with the main character. How very Special that all people love and are attracted to the Main Character. Plus, the whole pregnency storyline with the husband's reactions hits a kinda "reject" button for me. The only thing I did like about it was that the woman did not instantly feel she needed to love and cherish this child.

Yeeeeah, not only is the pregnancy thing weak drama at the end just for drama's sake, and utterly stupid, it's also one more reason why almost all of the characters are unlikable.
