My neighbor is thinking of getting chickens so she can have fresh eggs. Does she HAVE to get a rooster? I'm ok with the chickens, but I don't know of any way short of death that you can get rid of roosters crowing. And I don't like to awakened that early in the morning.

No, you do not need a rooster to have eggs for most breeds of chickens. You DO need a rooster if you want baby chickens, but not eggs (Don't think too hard on the human comparison for this or you'll be put off eggs).
Out of the breeds we have I'd recommend Australorps or Rhode Island Reds, though there are a bunch of heavy layer breeds out there I don't have experience with.
