Doomed Queens: The tragic tale of royal women who have met bad ends told in song.
Author Note #1: The idea for this fanmix has been running in my mind for over a year now and I've finally finished it. I don't know where my morbid obsession with the tragedy that was the lives of female monarchs but it has developed into a passion of mine and greatly influenced my love of history (which is one of my majors, the other being education).
I wanted to do a commentary for this and put tidbits of info on different queens for each song but I figure, if you're interested, ask in the comment section below and I'll give you some insight on my song choices and which queen(s) I had in mind.
A/N #2: The original picture I used for the cover art can be found
here.
Pretty Dress...Rosie Thomas
Put your pretty dress on
It's time for you to go to the dance
Tie your hair in ribbons and lace
And wear pearls around your neck
And all the pretty princes will see you
Marry Me...Emilie Autumn
What beautiful things I'll wear
What beautiful dresses and hair
I'm lucky to share his bed
Especially since I'll soon be dead
God Save the Queen...Nouvelle Vogue
Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
There's no future, no future
No future for you
Shut Your Mouth...Garbage
Shut your mouth
Try not to panic
Just shut your mouth
If you can do it
I hear you say it
Play it smart girl
Win the game love
Give 'em what they want
Apres Moi...Regina Spektor
I must go on standing
You can't break that which isn't yours
I must go on standing
I'm not my own, it's not my choice
Heads Will Roll...Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Off with your head
Dance 'til you're dead
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
On the floor
Viva La Vida...Lady Gaga
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets that I used to own
...
Revolutionaries wait
For my blonde head on a silver plate
Just a GaGa on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be queen?
O Death, Rock Me Asleep...Katy Rose
Alone in prison strong
I wait my destiny.
Woe worth this cruel hap that I
Should taste this misery!
Toll on, thou passing bell;
Ring out my doleful knell;
Let thy sound my death tell.
Death doth draw nigh;
There is no remedy.

EDITED, MORE NOTES: I believe that Marry Me is one of the best songs on this mix for the topic. It not only describes the life of Queens perfectly but the life of women throughout human's history. Women were not people, they were property, they were deals in a contracts and they had to stand there, look pretty, and act like they were not only happy with their lives but grateful to their masculine betters. The women we hear about in history class are the women that were extraordinary or defied their 'betters'. We rarely hear about the lives of the women who had no choice but to do what they told. I feel this song portrayed that voice, of 'these are my circumstances, how do I enjoy my life with what little control of it I have' and that plight that women have dealt with for century's. In my mind this song is an anthem. And I wish that the women of the past could see how far we come and how much closer we are to being the equals of our father, brothers, and husbands.
I suck at photoshop and spent the majority of my time making this mix trying to create a cover that was reminiscent of Hole's new cd cover but eventually I decided to go with the chess theme. For simplicity and also to go with Queen Victoria's Line in Young Victoria, "Do you ever feel like a chess piece yourself? In a game being played against your will. "
