Sango sighed softly as she polished her favoured weapon, Hiraikotsu. Miroku was studying one of his scrolls. Shippo was playing with his tip. Kaede was sorting through her drying herbs. InuYasha was paralyzed by several sutras that restrained his body and sealed his lips together. She tried to push away the vindictive satisfaction seeing the hanyous irate state of mind.

Shippo broke the silence with a whine. “When is Kagome going to come back? It’s been nearly a month now!”

Kaede coughed. “Be patient Shippo. She said that she had found a teacher in her own time. It makes perfect sense she wishes to learn all she can before resuming her quest for the Shikon shards.” The hanyou growled audibly. Kaede glanced at the hanyou. “I know you are impatient to resume the hunt but it is useless if Kagome isn’t here.” A more taunting gleam shone in her single eye. “You learnt that the hard way, didn’t you? You tried to search for the shards with Kikyo and failed. She cannot sense them the way Kagome can since she is no longer the true Guardian of the Shikon. That title passed to another when she died.”

InuYasha just growled.

Sango huffed. “You are the one who is always complaining about how weak Kagome is and how much better Kikyo is. Shows how much you know!” She smiled tauntingly. “I can’t wait for Kagome to return and show us just what she’s learnt!”

The bamboo curtain covering the doorway shifted to reveal the small thin frame of one of the villagers. “Kaede-sama! Kagome-sama has returned!”

Everyone got up. Miroku paused briefly to neutralize the sutras before following the two women and Shippo out of the hut.

InuYasha bounded to his feet and dashed after them. Then he stopped and growled at the unknown male near His Kagome.

“Kagome! Get away from him!”

The rest of the inu-taichi and the villagers watched. Miroku prepared some sutras in case InuYasha decided to act rashly.

Sango studied the male standing so close to Kagome. A head taller than her with silky black hair restrained in a loose tail with dark eyes, pale skin and very refined features and a slim strong build bearing several blades in open and hidden scabbards. He was dressed in shades of gray and black, strange close-fitting pants a tight fitting top, boots, and a backpack very similar to what Kagome was carrying. She was not in her usual school uniform but wore an outfit in green similar to her companion. He was relaxed but Sango sensed he could react in a flash. And she was right.

InuYasha jumped at Kagome, to pull away from the intruder, when he was intercepted and redirected to land in one of the thorn bushes grown as hedges to keep pests out of the kitchen gardens.

Kagome touched his arm and the couple walked towards Kaede. For the first time in a long while the old priestess could see pure joy in Kagomes eyes.

“Kaede-baa-chan, this is Uchiha Itachi, my teacher.” She was practically bubbling. “He actually taught me how to control and draw out my power in other ways than just arrows! It is so much better since I don’t have to worry about running out or losing my bow!”

Kaede frowned. “I thought you found your teacher in your own time.”

Itachi shrugged. “She did.” His voice was low and smooth. “I am a police detective but my family has ‘other’ abilities. Her mother asked me to teach her and when we found I could use the Well I agreed to accompany her to continue her training. And to protect her since her main protector is clearly incompetent and easily distracted from his charge.” His eyes did not even flicker to the growling hanyou.

And then he dodged carrying Kagome out of InuYasha uncontrolled pounce then dropped her carefully to her feet.

He stared at the hanyou with cool bored eyes. “If you wish to challenge me please do so. But I will not be held responsible for any damages done to the village.”

Kaede stiffened. “InuYasha! Stop! Don’t you dare attack Itachi-san in this village! Go outside and away from the fields!”

The hanyou fumed at the sharp rebuke but restrained the bloody urges. He would put this upstart in his place! He was Alpha! “Fine! Then lets fight!”

Itachi raised a faint brow. “Please, lead the way.”

Miroku coughed discreetly. “I believe the meadow on the other side of the river is suitable. It is a safe distance from the village.”

Itachi did not say anything, merely bent his head to whisper something in Kagomes ear.

The girl giggled and nodded her head. Then she wrapped her arm around his and tugged-guided him to the gates.

Miroku raised a brow seeing how closely Kagome leaned against the other male. They were practically glued to each other from hip to shoulder. And she was resting her head against his shoulder.

“Looks like Kagome-sama has found a new male friend.” He quipped.

Shippo blinked at this side of Kagome. “I thought she was goo-goo over dog-breath.”

Kaede snorted. “Every woman has a limit to how many chances we will give a man. If he simply does not learn the lesson and change he is not worth her time.” She ignored the growls from the hanyou. “It is not surprising she has given up on InuYasha given how badly he treats her and chases after my resurrected sister.”

InuYasha froze. Kagome had given up on him? No! He wouldn’t let her leave him! She promised to stay with him! He’d make her!

He barely restrained the urge to draw blood from the interloper. ‘Be patient, you’ll have your chance to put him in his place and thrash him thoroughly.’ His darker half whispered.

Itachi simply studied his opponent with cool, bored eyes. He had heard enough about his techniques and battle experience from Kagome, very limited and reliant on a few brute force approaches. Very easy to counter. So he said nothing when they crossed a bridge and reached the open meadow separated from the rice paddies by a river. And he took no actions while he waited with a bored, open stance, weapons still sheathed.

InuYasha finally broke and attacked first.

One minute he was soaring through the air, the next he was eating dirt from a vicious heel strike designed to drive him to the ground. By the time he managed to look up Itachi had resumed his previous bored stance.

---

“Sooo fast.” Shippo whispered. None of them had seen Itachi move until he was kicking InuYasha to the dirt from a higher altitude. “Are you sure he’s human Kagome-chan?”

Kagome giggled. “My purification powers don’t work on him. Itachi is human; just a little different with knowledge and abilities most humans don’t.”

“Sugoi.” Sango whispered. “Do you think he’ll be willing to teach me?”

“I don’t know if you can learn Sango-chan.” Kagome admitted honestly. “To use his jutsus you have to be able to channel power. Some people like me have it naturally, but others who want to learn have to start young. Itachi said something about chakra coils cannot expand for a first-timer who is older than fifteen.” Sango deflated. Quickly Kagome continued. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn other stuff from Itachi-kun. Things like shuriken and kunai throwing! He also knows a lot of weapon techniques.”

Immediately Sango cheered at the thought of a new sparring partner. InuYasha had no finesse and he usually relied on brute force to win his battles. Sango had to calculate and leverage her odds in order to win her fights.

Then Shippo noticed something disturbing. “InuYasha is going to use Tetsaiga! Stop him Kagome-chan!”

“I won’t have to.” Kagome spoke serenely. Everyone stared at her confused. “Itachi told me not to interfere. Just watch.”

So they did.

---

InuYasha smirked as he prepared his most oft used attack.

“Kaze no Kinu!”

To InuYashas shock the human did not jump. He stood waiting for the attack. Then he raised his hands and did a series of weird gestures.

A soft blue glow surrounded his hands, then he raised his right clenched fist and brought it down in a slash speaking clearly.

“Fuuton: Kaze no Yaiba!”

A blue slash left his right hand forming a barely visible crescent shock wave. The attack disrupted the kaze no kinu and dissipated its energies.

InuYasha stared shocked. The human had countered one of his strongest attacks! And without a blade of his own!

Itachi smirked. “Kaze no Yaiba, Mid class-B futon ninjutsu on the power scale D up to A then S which is highest. Is that all you have… InuYasha?”

InuYasha growled and began attacking with stronger more destructive attacks. Each were easily countered by the ningen.

“Doton: Granite Wall.”

Finally InuYasha broke and attacked Itachi with his clawed hands. And was easily handled by the shinobi who was used to fighting opponents as strong and fast but far more skilled than the enraged hanyou.

Deciding to end the demonstration Itachi allowed the hanyou to toss him in the air. Itachi curled into a ball then straightened, angling his body to fall in the river. But he didn’t. Fall in that is.

He stood up on the surface of the running water and walked towards the middle and deepest portion where the currents ran strongest. Then he did a series of hand seals calling out the name of the attack. “Suiton: Great Rising Dragon.”

A monstrous amount of water rose from the water and shaped itself into a massive dragon above Itachi before it lashed out at InuYasha.

The hanyou barely had no time to react. The water dragon crashed into him and carried him straight through two young trees before plowing him into the dirt and away creating a twenty foot long furrow.

Itachi gracefully walked across the river and then onto the bank, his breath even and expression composed. His eyes were warm as they glanced at three shocked faces and the beaming face of Kagome.

“I trust there is no doubt about my skill or abilities to protect and teach Kagome.”

Mirokus eyes widened. “You’ve been teaching Kagome-sama how to do that?!?”

Kagome giggled. “Not exactly. Those ninjutsu are geared to be offensive. Itachi has been teaching me more defensive techniques. And fuuin jutsus that are very similar to your sutra scrolls Miroku! That’s how we stopped InuYasha from coming to drag me back.”

Miroku bowed his head. “You are more than welcome to join our group Itachi-san. I would also appreciate anything you can teach me about fuuin jutsus. It would prove most useful in our journey.”

Itachi nodded. “Of course. I’ve already written up a study plan. Fuuin jutsus for you, weapons techniques and some taijutsu for the taijiya, some genjutsu for the kitsune.

Shippo bounced eagerly. “Really? You’re going to train me?”

Itachi softened a tad. “Kagome tells me you are good with illusions, that it is part of your talents. Genjutsu will expand your repertoire and you are young enough to learn it.” The shinobi glanced at the unconscious hanyou. “Would someone look after the hanyou? I wish to continue with Kagomes lessons.”

Miroku blinked. “Of course. Sango and I will take care of InuYasha.”

Itachi inclined his head and walked off followed by the cheerful young miko.

The group watched the couple heading towards the village with bemused eyes.

“InuYasha is not going to like this.” Miroku murmured.

“Too bad. Kagome has better things to do than worry about how he feels.” Sango murmured with vicious satisfaction.

“I like Itachi-san.” Shippo announced. “InuYasha always puts me and Kagome-chan down about how weak we are. But Itachi-san is willing to teach us and Kagome-chan how to be strong. And he proved that he is stronger and Alpha.”

Miroku blinked. “Really?”

“Oh yes. InuYasha might complain but since Itachi-san has beat him thoroughly his instincts will place him higher up in the pack. Oh he will probably challenge Itachi-san on a regular basis to regain his old standing but I think Itachi-san will not be beaten easily.”

And Shippo was right.

In the weeks that followed each time InuYasha challenged the newcomer he was beaten up thoroughly. Oh InuYasha killed most of the youkai attackers but only because Itachi preferred to stick close to Kagome and kill all those approaching her. As a result the number of injuries decreased because the other three regular fighters in the group were not constantly having to protect the miko. Not that she needed it at this point. She was more than able to look after herself but Itachi refused to leave her unguarded citing his promise to her mother, Hiragushi Asuka.
