Kagome groaned softly and shifted upon the soft cotton sheets. Then she stiffened and opened her eyes. The modern features of a white ceiling and overhead light caught her eyes. She was home.
“Kaa-san! Kagome-chan is awake!”
She struggled to turn her head. It was Souta. He had been sitting on the ground reading his manga while he watched over her.
Then the door slid open and the familiar face of her mother lightened her heart.
“Kagome-chan!”
She rushed in to pet and touch the teenager. In that moment Kagome knew everything would be all right.
She allowed her mother to prop her up and to fuss over her. And her brother to make his usual rude comments before running off. As Kagome settled against the headboard she realized her body was in much better condition than it should be. The usual ache of bone deep bruises, the stretch of just scabbed wounds, the numbness of deeply cut flesh… they were all missing. But before she could ask her mother made her own demands.
“Kagome-chan. Tell me everything. Don’t try to put InuYasha in a good light.”
The stern words and warm eyes made Kagome broke.
“Kaa-san I don’t know how I can do this any more! It hurt when he went to her before but now his actions have put my and the others lives in danger!”
“What do you mean? Who did this to you?”
“It was Narakus detachment Kagura. But she never could have gotten close to us if Kikyo hadn’t led InuYasha off like a puppy with a new bone! She said Kikyo had made a deal with Naraku to lure InuYasha away! I don’t like Kagura that much but I trust Kikyo a whole lot less! She’s already betrayed us once by giving the shards to Naraku and tried to kill us several times!” Kagome was in tears. “But InuYasha refuses to listen to us! He says he wants to kill Naraku but he refuses to see that the Bitch is working for him!”
Something hardened in Asuka. She had considered InuYasha as a second son, but his careless treatment and negligence of her precious daughter was unacceptable.
“Kagome-chan, I want you to listen to me. I’ve found someone who might be able to teach you how to control and manipulate your powers. I want you to stay here and study before going back.”
“But InuYasha won’t let me! You know how he is!”
“Then the well will be sealed against him.” A cool masculine voice interrupted.
Kagome turned her head very fast and froze to see the beautiful male leaning against the door frame. He was the dark mirror image of Sesshoumaru with his black hair, dark eyes pale complexion, and dark clothes; black jeans, navy blue shirt, and black hip-length leather jacket. As he stepped closer she felt a familiar tinge in her hands.
“Are you a hanyou? You kind of feel like one.”
He chuckled. “Your mother asked me that. The answer is I don’t know. But I can manipulate my personal energies and your mother has asked me to teach you how to do the same with your reiki.”
Kagome frowned. “I don’t know what you can do. Kaede-baa-san tried to teach me but I never quite got the hang of it.”
He did a series of weird hand signs that took just a few seconds. And then a flame lit up from two fingers pointing up. “Lowest-level katon jutsu. My people tend to shape the energies around the elements but I do know jutsus that shape raw chakra. The same principles should work for your reiki.”
Kagomes eyes widened in awe. Then she drooped. “I don’t know how to seal the well properly.” She admitted. “Last time I tried InuYasha broke through in a few hours.”
He frowned faintly. “I know several basic fuuin jutsus. I’ll guide you through casting one. But first I’d like to see if I can go through the well with you.”
Kagome stared at him. “I don’t know. InuYasha is the only one who can do that and I think it’s because of the subjugation beads I put on him.”
He pushed aside her protests. “If it doesn’t work it doesn’t work. If it does I will be going with you into the past to protect you.”
Kagome sputtered in protest. “Hey! Who do you think you are?!?”
He smirked. “My name is Uchiha Itachi. I am a detective with the 59th division.”
And then he turned and left leaving a smiling mother to deal with her enraged, scared, and confused daughter.
---
Itachi smiled as he heard the eruption coming from the room beside the kitchen. It had been one hour already and still the daughter of the house was making a fuss. Understandable given that her family usually followed her lead in matters concerning her trips to the past.
“Are you really going to teach Kagome?”
He turned and stared at Souta. “Yes. From what I can see she hasn’t been given any grounding in control. I can teach you while I teach her if you wish but the lessons will be a little rushed.”
Souta frowned. “What are you going to do? About your job I mean.”
“I’m going to be taking a leave of absence. A month at least. I have accumulated enough vacation time.”
Souta scuffed his shoe. “Are you really going to go to the past with her?”
“If the well allows me.” Itachi pointed out. “If it does it will be best so I can continue teaching your sister and ensuring her safety.”
Souta struggled with jealous and relief. Relief won. “You’ll teach me when you get back, right?”
“If I return I will teach you.” Soutas eyes darkened. “I’m not saying that because I don’t want to teach you Souta. There is every chance that I will die. I would be a fool not to acknowledge and plan for that possibility.” Itachi explained gently.
Souta blinked and nodded.
The two were surprised by Kagome dressed in jeans, sneakers and a loose yellow t-shirt carrying a small box and folded paper.
“What is that?” Souta wanted to know.
“A note. The box has a more detailed letter but it can only be opened by Miroku or Kaede using their spiritual powers.” Kagome explained. Then she looked Itachi in the eye. “I want to leave this for them.”
Itachi nodded and followed Kagome into the well house. He joined her sitting on the edge of the well legs dangling over the edge. He did not protest as she gripped his hand tightly before pushing off, dragging him with her.
Dark eyes widened as a wash of blue light and energy filled the base of the well just before they hit the bottom.
And then it faded.
---
Kagome hit the ground flat. Itachi more gracefully in a crouch.
He tilted his head back. He could see the clear night sky twinkling with stars through the branches of massive trees.
Kagome grabbed the vines and started pulling herself up. She nearly screamed when a strong arm wrapped around her waist drawing her close to a lean body radiating heat. She did not gasp as he somehow bounded out of the well in InuYasha-like fashion. Her knees were a tad unsteady when he put her down.
She watched him walk around the clearing observing paths into it and the ground.
“How did you do that? Jump so high so easily?”
“Chakra control.” He answered absently. “A trained shinobi can channel chakra to augment muscles and increase reflexes. Where is the well house?”
“I don’t know.” Kagome admitted. “Presumably it is built at some point in time between now in the feudal era and the modern era.”
Itachi nodded absently and walked over to the well.
Kagome carefully left the box and note under a log she used as a seat before jumping back into the well holding onto her new sensei.
A blue flash of light later and they were in the bottom of the well with the familiar roof above. She did not stiffen as he carried her out in a single bound to where Souta was waiting for them with a quiver of arrows, a pot of ink, brush, and several strips of parchment used for jii-jiis ofudas.
She glanced blankly at Itachi who accepted the writing tools and began drawing several unfamiliar symbols onto the strips of parchment and walk around the perimeter of the well wall nailing the ofudas down with an arrow. Seven in all.
“Why so many?”
“Prime numbers are best. One, two, three, five, seven, thirteen. Each is not dependent on an equal opposite though there are exceptions. The key to fuuin jutsu is to shape your energy using special hand seals that will channel it in the correct pattern. The drawn seals will shape and amplify the rest.”
“What are the seals you’ve drawn?”
“Basic barrier and repulsion seals. It takes energy directed at it and reflects it back in the form of lightening.”
“But what if InuYasha uses the kaze no kinu?”
Itachi smirked. “He will either be destroyed by the backlash or he will destroy the well. I believe your human friends will stop him before he attempts something so foolish.”
Kagome blinked. “True. Miroku and Kaede can probably paralyze him. Or even seal him in a hut if he is acting stupid.”
Itachi nodded sharply. “Good. Now I want you to rest. Do nothing strenuous today. I need to do some shopping before I start both of your lessons tomorrow.”
Kagome blinked. Souta beamed.
“Yeah! Itachi-san said he’d teach me how to use chakra! And kaa-san said it was okay!”
Kagome stared at her brother but she couldn’t bring herself to protest. Besides her mother had given Souta permission to learn so she couldn’t say no.
...ooOoo...
Four weeks later Kagome dressed herself in her new clothes. Stuff she had purchased under Itachis direction. Loose green camo pants, black combat boots, a light gray t-shirt and heavy olive green water proofed canvas jacket. She wore a pouch on her right thigh and another at the small of her back. Her familiar yellow canvas backpack had died so she purchased a steel-framed hikers backpack in dark blue and dark grey. She carried other weapons in sheathes hidden on various parts of her body.
In the weeks after the first trip to the past Itachi had trained her hard. There were hours of physical conditioning when he was or wasn’t around. And then the mental conditioning in Tsukiyomi. They had spent the equivalent of months in Tsukiyomi exercising and developing Kagomes control. A couple of minutes in the real world was equivalent to three days in an alternate realm. It was a draining technique used only once a day but it meant Kagome received an additional three weeks for one week of real time.
It was in this time that Itachi had confessed his true origins and bloody past. He had been shocked by her easy acceptance but Kagome was not one to hold grudges especially when the guilty party was clearly trying to make amends.
“Are you ready?”
She stared at him. He looked like a coldly distant stranger. His hair had grown out and was secured in a loose messy tail, strands kept out of his eyes with a black bandenna wrapped around his forehead. He wore gray camo pants, black combat boots and a black sleeveless t-shirt with long bicep high custom gloves. They were fingerless with steel plates sewn on the back of the palms and composite carbon forearm guards. He wore a pouch on each thigh, two blades at each side, a third on a back sheath and a dark gray backpack.
“You will be cold.” Kagome warned him.
He shrugged off her cautious words. “I’ll use chakra to regulate my temperature. And I have a poncho if it gets really bad.”
Kagome shook her head but did not say anything. It was time to say farewell to her family and fulfill her duty.
She stilled tears as she hugged her mother and grandfather tight.
“I won’t be back until Naraku is dead and the Shikon is restored. Now I am strong enough to finish it.”
Hiragushi Sojo did not say a word but he smiled broadly. This young man was a hanyou but he was more trustworthy and dependable than that InuYasha. He was born in modern era, raised and comfortable with Kagomes own values and society. He was educated with a steady job he had quit in order to protect Kagome. And best of all he was just a few years older than her! He began to day dream about great-grandchildren.
“Jii-jii.”
“Yes Asuka-chan?”
“Could you pray? For Kagome and Itachi?”
Sojo snorted. “I don’t need to Asuka. That young man will bring Kagome from the arms of Shinikami-sama if needs be.”
