Curveballs

The entire house was quiet, the room almost stiflingly so. They sat on the couch, just a few inches apart, both staring out a little shocked.
He was the first to break the quiet. "So you're...?"
She nodded.
Jake swallowed tightly, his lips curling slowly until it became a full blown grin. "Haley, this is..."
Her eyes were filled with tears as she turned toward him. "I know... I just... I wasn't expecting it to happen so fast and now..." She sniffled. "We're going to have a baby," she half-cried, half-exclaimed.
"Did the hormones always start so early?" he wondered teasingly.
Reaching out, Haley slapped his shoulder lightly, but laughed still.
Pulling her into his arms, he hugged her close. "Hey, we're gonna be fine. We've already raised two amazing kids when we were still kids ourselves. We're older now and we know what we're doing." He kissed her hair. "This baby is going to be the third luckiest kid alive."
She chuckled. "I don't know if Jamie and Jenny would agree they were the luckiest kids alive, Jake... The first few years of their lives were-"
"With the most amazing mother and father ever," he boasted kindly. "Look Jenny may not have had a mother there until you, but I gave her the best life possible. And just because you and Nathan were split up and having problems didn't mean Jamie was any less loved. You were the most incredible mom through all of that. And now..." He reached out, rubbing her flat stomach. "Now we're going to be able to give this child a whole and complete family with an incredible brother and sister to love them too."
She smiled up at him adoringly. "You're amazing, you know that?"
He shrugged. "I think it's my wife's doing... She's kind of amazing herself."
Haley chuckled, reaching up to cup his face with her hands. "So we're going to be parents... again." She nodded, grinning widely.
He pressed his forehead to hers, their noses brushing. "I can't wait..."
"Me either," she whispered emotionally.
He kissed her, drawing her into his lap and wrapping his arm around her tightly.
So it was a little earlier than expected and often, life threw them curveballs they really weren't equipped for. But now, they had each other and their children and another on the way and while life had never been easy for them, Jake and Haley Jagielski were willing to face it and live it together.
