There was a "Mildred" of sorts when I was growing up, namely my Dad's asshole-friend Ray. He was a grating, sexist (probably also racist), pig of a man, and my Dad actually liked him. For years, the rest of the family had to put up with him, until he and his second wife moved out of state.

My brother also had a friend like that, and my sister once said that THAT guy was our brother's "Ray." My brother loves him, but the guy is a jerk.

The difference here is that your mother doesn't seem to like Mildred much either, but doesn't want to hurt her feelings. At least you know your mother isn't completely insane... ;)

This reminds me so much of a "family friend" we had. She's out of our lives now though.

It sounds like your mom doesn't especially like Mildred either, but mostly just puts up with her. God bless caller ID.

Oh, my goodness, I feel for you. How troubling... I hope you don't have to put up with her much, and I'm glad you can avoid her most of the time. What an albatross!
