I did not expect to be writing an identity-related post tonight

…but here I am.

I was reading the introduction to a book, a book with stories in it from authors whose work I love, a book I was looking forward to reading.

And there was a reference to “gay, lesbian, and transgender.” Several times, throughout. “Gay, lesbian, and transgender.”

Okay, so I am not the biggest fan of the actual word “bisexual.” I will ( Read more... )

Thank you for a fantastic post!

i like to tell people i'm Ambisextrous. when i was a little kid growing up, i had no idea people were "supposed" to be straight--i thought everyone was bi because that was what felt natural to me. Now, after years of hearing "Oh, bisexuality so trendy!," You're just greedy--make up your mind!" or "Being bi is just being slutty!," i'm in a monagamous marriage with a man, and suddenly the orientation i've held since i knew what sex was is null and void? i don't get it. Why is who i share my genitals with the interest of anyone else i'm not?

i agree with erika--people are too caught up in their own boxes!
(pun intended)

Well said.

I particularly liked:
Where you are on the continuum today may not be where you are tomorrow, or next year, or ten years from now.
and,
We like to put things, and people, into clear-cut categories. They don’t always fit.

Throughout my life I have never actually labeled myself under one specific sexuality. I very rarely talk about dating or sex or attraction. A lot of people seem to be confused by this.

When pressed, I'll say something along the lines of "it's not one of my top priorities." Which people seem to take as an invitation to ask me a million very personal questions about my sexual history and/or desires. Just because I'm not like you doesn't mean I'm a freak to be poked and prodded.

People need to accept that not everyone is the same, and not everyone falls into a neat little category.
