Revisiting my references to find examples and pictures for the complex weaves class has been a bit daunting. It turns out that something an awful lot like overshot, which I tend to think of as a primarily colonial American weave, shows up in Viking times under several names including monk's belt and daldrall. It never occurred to me that overshot was that old - much like you, I had sort of classified it in my head as colonial American and moved on.

How do you think the boucle was used? I've seen it in many Coptic examples as well-- on clavi!
