Roxanne Ritchi of Megamind

Mar 29, 2012 21:54

I remember going to see Megamind, the story of a stereotypical villain who becomes a hero, with faint trepidation as well as hope. I was hoping because I thought the set-up was clever--why do these brilliant supervillains, with inventions and minions aplenty, never win? Maybe because they unconsciously don't want to, and if they succeeded in ( Read more... )

Hadn't heard much about how Megamind was, but think I'll have to watch it now. You always direct me to the awesome ladies. Thank you! (Recently read Feed on your recommendation, forgetting the part where reading the end in a public location may be a bad idea. Made the mistake of reading the end in an airport. Many tears.)

I am SO looking forward to Team Human and Unspoken. 2012 is the best year ever!

I hear you about Feed! I learned my lesson: Deadline was read on a deserted grassy knoll, with calming lemonade. And I hope you enjoy Megamind. ;)

I am SO NERVOUS about Team Human and Unspoken I do not know what to do with myself, but so pleased you are looking forward!

Yes. This. I must also get this movie now if I do not already have it.

These reviews, they are awesomeness!

I love this series of yours. So much fun! And your commentary is always funny and insightful both.

As for Will Ferrell and Steve Carrell, I also despaired of understanding why they were popular. Then I saw "Dan in Real Life" (Carrell) and "Stranger Than Fiction" (Ferrell), and I loved them. In those movies. Admittedly, the rest of the casts in those movies helped out a LOT (MOAR EMMA THOMPSON/JULIETTE BINOCHE) but these guys are obviously intelligent, resourceful actors with serious chops. Which makes me think "Why can't they do that ALL THE TIME? Why must they be buffoons and irritants?" I believe the answer is something like "Buffoonery pays the bills, dude." Very disheartening.

Anyhoodle, just FYI, in case you were looking for good movies in general, and reasons not to despair of those actors in particular.

I do keep meaning to watch Stranger Than Fiction. Stupid, Crazy, Love may have turned me off Steve Carrell forever, though, I just resented him being there so much when I wanted to watch Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and Julianne Moore. (Good movie, though! All the bits with Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and Julianne Moore, anyway...)

Stranger Than Fiction was actually far better than I expected. I went in to it quite grimly, determined to watch only because 1. Emma Thompson & 2. My Mommy Had Told Me To, and I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it!

I wouldn't have minded 'Stupid Crazy Love' so much if it wasn't for the ridiculous subplot with Steve Carell's son where he basically stalks his babysitter (while his dad encourages him) until she 'gives in' and gives him naked pictures of herself. Ew.
Someone did a great recap of it here: http://scottalanmendelson.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/review-crazy-stupid-love-is-stupid.html

Megamind was one of those films I was so doubtful about it, but then when I saw it, I loved it. I loved that the leading lady was obviously the smartest person in the show, and that she got to prove it, and didn't lose any credibility or desirability because she was smart as well as attractive.

An excellent post! I only just saw MEGAMIND a couple of weeks ago, and I heartily agree with all the great points you've made here. Roxanne was a delightful surprise to me -- if I'd known the movie had a character like her in it, I would have wanted to see it much earlier.
