Title! Title! I have a title!

Here is some stuff you guys should know. One: I am in France. It is a good time. Cassie Clare said to me 'What are you doing in July' and I said 'Erm... up to no good as usual, I guess' and she said 'What do you want to do in July?'

I was reading Mary Stewart's Madam Will You Talk at the time, because it is a Gothic novel and I am on a mission to ( Read more... )

Woohoo! I love the title (totally conjures up an awesome package). I am envious of you having genius friends who can think of good titles. I am currently in re-titling hell for three of the books I'm working on for this season.

Oooh, I would like to know what re-titling is like on the editorial side. I've been jealous of quite a few writers whose publishers thought up their awesome titles.

It's a bit like pornography, I suppose (wait...possibly not the most appropriate comparison, but still apt)--I know a good title when I see it. But it all depends on so many different people; I like a title, but if marketing or sales doesn't think it will work, then it's back to the drawing board. (As for who has the final word--that all depends. General consensus usually rules the day.) Of course there may be author resistance as well. Mostly it's a whole bunch of us (marketing, editorial, sales) and the author throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.

(Do we know what we're doing in this business? The evidence seems to point to no. ;-))

Do not be jealous. All that happens is that you descend into agonized despair because you HATE the new title, which is so much worse than the one you had suggested and so wrong for the book and clearly nobody gets your writing at all. It takes you 3 weeks to come around and realize that, actually, your editor's titles is kind of perfect. By which time Marketing has rejected it.

Having possibly satisfied your curiosity, I'll just add that I am REALLY excited about this book, and also suggest that you add Deanna Raybourn to your Gothic reading list.

What happened to Listen for a Whisper? *sighs* I'm still super excited for it, though, and I can't wait until its release!

It was, as discussed above, one of the titles with 'whisper' in we didn't go with. Worried that it conjured up someone who was hard of hearing! And there are a lot of books that use the word 'whisper.'

I hope you will like it. ;)

Provence! I will be in Provence in September, though only for a few days.

I love both the series and book titles! I also just read TDS a couple of weeks ago from the library and loved it, too, but I'm not sure I can read any discussion of it yet because I love it too much and reliving it may cause me to go insane(r). I can't wait to have Unspoken do the same thing to me, which is rather a sick thing to say, but I guess that's what happens when you love books. ^^
