Now that I've read it - that was so lovely! (That is, it made me cry a bit, but in a good way; the Ryvses tend to break my heart. OH ALAN. just want to hug him!)

I am sort of flailing and whimpering incoherently, so I am very sorry, but this is so awesome, it is so--I have this thing, right, where I am a teacher and I am at university to learn to be a better teacher and I think the way children learn is the most fascinating thing on the face of the earth, and the way that you have portrayed this, this weird mixture of how everybody learns and how Nick learns, I want to hug you forever because it is very right and awesome in many ways.

*falls over from flailing too hard*

*beams* How Nick learns is tricky, and talking about how I think about it through Nick is trickier (though via someone else's would be no picnic...) so I am very glad that you as a teacher felt I got some stuff right.

There is this whole, this social learning thing, which is actually my favorite thing to study because there is something wrong with my brain chemistry that made me a little like Nick in that I didn't learn to relate to people the way most children do (although I was talking like an adult at age five), and it's really fascinating to see that in a character and see the clash and the different motivations and stuff and...I could totally talk about this in a coherent, academic way in a classroom but I am verbally flailing instead because of the awesome in the story so I will stop now.

I'm seconding the love for social learning and what Nick does and does not know.

Also, ALAN IS HIS FAVOURITE!

Thanks so much for this Sarah! *hug* And the picture of Nick wearing a hat is hilarious.

I love this story so much.

I know you didn't write Nick to be autistic spectrum, and you didn't want there to be any parallels because, well, spoilers + autistic spectrum = badness, but really, this is how we think, to some extent.
