Clyde or Kelsey?

I was watching Invasion of the Bane last night (for the first time in a while), and it made me realise just how annoying Kelsey was and that it was a blessing that Clyde replaced her. And I wondered how many people agree with me, or if they disagree. SO I ask, would you have prefered Kelsey to remain a regular, or are you glad that Clyde is now ( Read more... )

At the time of airing I seemed to be one of the few people who didn't mind Kelsey, and it'd be interesting to see Maria with a female friend her own age - I love Clyde, though, so I'd much rather have him on the team.

I can't remember what I first thought of Kelsey. I think she was just background noise. I was too excited seeing Sarah Jane, K9, Doctor Who references and the sonic lipstick!!! Now we have Clyde and I'm very happy. He is much more loveable!!!

I remember rather liking Kelsey, but I can absolutely see why they'd want to replace her; her disbelieving schtick would be difficult to keep up and detrimental to most stories (not to mention that it overlaps with Maria's mother's thing, where it works better because she's a secondary character) and also I think they realized that they needed another boy so they could even out the cast a bit, 'cause Luke was the only boy of the four main cast and, let's face it, he's kinda girly.

Why do sweet sensitive guys always have to get labeled "girly" - that's why society is full of self entitled he man women hateing jerks... sigh.

I didn't mind Kelsey, and I thought she could have become softer over the series and people would have warmed to her, but Clyde was immediately a sweeter and more likeable character, I think.

You know they have almost exactly the same personality and yet society (me included unfortunately) will always like Clyde better - why? Because it's ok for a boy to act like that, but we bristle when it's a girl.

I actually think that, while they're similar, Kelsey is more in-your-face in terms of being always on (at least in the one ep we saw her in).

I also think that the two characters are primarily serving to further the development of the white kids; Kelsey helped us get to know Maria, then Clyde helps Luke get to know himself (and us, correspondingly) to get to know him. So I think they're there to serve a purpose regarding the other characters more than to be there unto themselves...and I find that a bit disturbing now that I've thought it through.

See I don't think Kelsy was anymore in your face (esp if all you compare is first epi to first epi) - we just notice it more because she's a girl ( ... )

I might have grown to like Kelsey, but I liked Clyde from the start.

Clyde any day of the week. the group dynamic is better and I don't think the closeness between Sarah Jane and Maria would have developed if Maria had had a friend her own age on the team.

I also did find Kelesy incredibly annoying. Clyde is a much better friend for Luke and a much better foil for Sarah Jane.

I loved Kelsey - she was the only thing I liked about the pilot, actually, and almost didn't watch the rest because she wasn't in it. As it was it took me ages to get caught up since I'd been so down on the pilot as a whole. Then I met Clyde. Well, I love Clyde, so. Couldn't we have both? ;D

I kind of really want Kelsey to come back as a secondary character, actually. More than that, though, I want her to get picked up by the Doctor and proceed to annoy the hell out of him by denying that they're on alien planets, even when the evidence is right there, to the point that you begin to suspect that she's doing it on purpose just to get him to keep trying to prove it to her and not take her home, and also because she thinks annoying him is funny.

I've considered writing fic along those lines, actually. I just need to re-watch "Invasion of the Bane" so I can remember how Kelsey's dialogue sounded.

You mean you want her to take over Ian's old job?
