Port Douglas ocean drive, Mossman Gorge, and Daintree

Dec 07, 2008 22:11

On Tuesday I ventured out on a daytrip, north to Port Douglas and beyond to Mossman Gorge and Daintree. Beyond that I would have had to take a ferry across the Daintree River, so I capped it there since I didn't want to be driving back in the dark either. The road to Port Douglas is one of the world's most scenic ocean drives, gripping the coast ( Read more... )

Ooo Irukandji!

I got nabbed by one of those (different species from the lethal ones, but same genus) during my trip and spent about an hour with full body cramps. Not cool.

Definitely try for the diving. It'll be spectacular wherever you go. Have you got an underwater camera? Even a cheap throwaway one is better than nothing.

Gorgeous as always!

I've been in Cairns for nearly two weeks and haven't gone to a beach yet cos I've been so busy driving around the Tablelands to the west! I read that the tiny jellyfish can get through the stinger nets anyway (??), so with all the gorgeous freshwater swimming holes around, I'm not sure there's even point in risking it, haha! I might have a beach day tomorrow though. :) I was going to do my dive tomorrow, but I didn't get back into town in time to book it tonight, and besides, every muscle in my body hurts from the six hour horse trek I went on yesterday!!

The freshwater swimming holes are awesome, it's true, but you can't beat checking out the wildlife and the environment -below water- with the ocean.

Plus, if you're out diving on a boat, you'll be avoiding the jelly fish as you'll be below the surface. They tend to be in the first few feet of water and you'll likely be diving in 10 m or more.

Neat -- I didn't know that. Well, I guess I did indirectly because I knew that they don't usually worry about them on dive boats because they are far away from the mainland, but I suppose if the boat was near an island you could still get them. Where were you when you got stung?

heh, it's cool to read you are driving in our footsteps from a couple years back. I loved that road to Port Douglas. So achingly beautiful, isn't it! Did you notice that most of the trees lining it are actually mango trees? If you act fast you can get fresh mango off the tree for free :-)
Mossman Gorge is so beautiful, hey! We went hiking in there too. It can get a bit scary, but you won't end up on a milk carton; we don't do that here ;-)
You MUST SCUBA!!!!!! It's incredible, I would love to do that up there but when I went up it wasn't possible *grumble*

No, I didn't know about the mango trees... cool! Might just have to take another trip up there, although Rusty's Markets are pretty wicked too.

Thinking of doing the dive on Sunday or Monday! Woo!

So they really do give you bottles of vinegar for the stings! The signs are getting more and more entertaining over there.

Yes, vinegar deactivates the stinging cells of the tentacles. Funny how sometimes a household product works better than anything else!

I've got some SWEET signs coming up for you guys!

Urine and meat tenderizer are also great, uh, first aid necessities for jelly fish stings....
