White Island and more dolphins

Apr 20, 2009 00:18

On March 24th, the tour of White Island was finally a go, and it was so worth waiting for! Not only was the weather absolutely perfect on both the mainland and the island, but the tour was great AND we saw more dolphins on the way out and the way back! As you might predict, I went photo-mad, and even though I have tried to whittle the number down ( Read more... )

"and it's the gold medal to the dolphins for the synchronised diving!"

those are truly spectacular photos! [adds another to the ever-growing list]

unfortunately, some "older" *cough* people have feet problems, and can only wear certain types of shoes. I'm trying hard to not be one of them just yet. I'm just at the stage of having to wear 'fat tourist' shoes [seriously ugly joggers] because of collapsing bones.

Don't worry, I was commenting more on the unsuitability of her footwear than the style of them. :) But yeah, what is with therapeutic shoes being ugly? Although with my torn knee ligaments, I had to do some shopping in such shoe stores and I was glad to find some that were still flattering!

i find that wearing flat shoes is fine by me, but ATM I can only wear these blasted joggers. so, if I wish to get dressed up for any reason, the effect is ruined by ... joggers.
maybe the lady hadn't expected to go somewhere where her comfy shoes were inappropriate.

I can't view the aerial photo! T_T Think the link doesn't quite work. =o

Oh no, it's a pity about the lahar killing the workers. =\ I learnt about those in Geography.

I love the pictures of the water with different pH levels though!

Something about the lumpy cooled lava makes me think of dinosaurs =o

I'd love to be able to see that acidic crater lake up close *_*

The two-coloured water when you were back on the boat isn't due to some kind of shadow? =o it sure looks like it!

Wonder what White Island looks like when it rains? =o

Love, love the dolphin photos! They look so sleek and unreal! =o

Link fixed! You're the only one who commented on it not working, you attentive little reader. :)

I think the cooled lava just looks ANCIENT, which also applies to dinosaurs!

The two-coloured water is definitely due to the different acidities... they refuse to mix, kind of like oil and water!

I doubt many people get to see White Island when it rains, because rain is usually accompanied by wind, and then the boat can't go out!

Thanks! =D White Island looks really beautiful from above too! (I'd love to live there, if it weren't impossible to =p)

Nah, you wouldn't want to live there... your clothes start getting holes in them from the sulphuric gases. Just imagine what that'd be doing to your body! Although the miners apparently didn't have any negative after-effects...

wow those dolphins were really showing off for you. I took a helicopter ride over a volcano on the island of St. Lucia and it was thrilling but at the same time I was scared shitless because the pilot was an ex Vietnam pilot, and we felt that at times he forgot he was zooming through the jungles of a tropical island, not Vietnam.

Haha, that sounds exciting! While a helicopter ride would have been awesome, I wouldn't have got to see the dolphins then, so I am glad I did the boat. And yes, it was as if the dolphins were showing off... they followed the boat for some time, jumping over and over. :)

I was so excited for this extended dolphin post! Amazing. What were the photo settings for your fave pic (ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc)? :)

It was on shutter priority at 1/640 because I knew I'd need a fast one to capture them in the moment (the ones from the dolphin swim were not taken on a fast enough shutter speed and had slight motion blur, so I was sure to rectify that this time). The camera chose F4.5 and ISO 250 to compliment my chosen shutter speed. :)
