Westport to Karamea

I'm in Whakatane right now, friends. "Wh" is pronounced "F" in New Zealand, so tourists are typically quite amused with the opportunity to say the name for obvious reasons. :p ( Read more... )

Y'know, I think the pictures of the pancake rocks are at the top of my favorite pictures list....let's hope your bandwidth doesn't give out on you, we still need those pictures!

I'll check out the link for the wireless, is the company also in Australia? I think I'm going to be going to a great deal of libraries...

I think this company is just in NZ, but hopefully there is a similar one in Oz that I didn't hear of. Every hostel has internet, but I didn't really like having to use their computers (and transfer my stuff to upload, etc.). Wireless hotspots were expensive... like $10/h! If you're stubborn like me, you'll reduce your internet usage dramatically. :p

Oh noes! I was planning on using Skype to keep in contact with the family back home, I suppose I'll see how it goes.

So do you recommend bringing your laptop along with you? Did you have a hard time with security in the hostels, or you just left it at front desk like you mentioned before?

I used Skype a lot! But mostly when I was staying with friends (Maggie, Roni, etc.) Most backpacker towns have abundant internet cafes as well, and ones like Global Gossip have wireless internet, as well as Skype AND webcams on their computers (same price to use yours or theirs, I think ( ... )

I think the possum is cute too! =P

Where do you bed down for the night, and is it safe? =o

Well that night I stayed down in the parking lot there because it would have been dangerous to go back up that windy road in the dark! But I usually try to find a no-frills Department of Conservation campsite ($5-$8 for a place to park and maybe a bathroom) because you're not supposed to camp in non-designated spots obviously. Every 2-3 days I stay in a place that has a shower and kitchen so I can wash up and cook some real food!!

Where do you get your cooking utensils from? =o Are there many of these campsites around?

I have the basic cooking utensils (bought at a secondhand store for dirt cheap). There are lots of Dept. of Conservation campsites, but sometimes they are clustered together in places and non-existent in other areas, or accessed by long gravel roads out into the middle of nowhere. :p
