I purchased the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook 2010 today (to discover it is exactly the same as the 2009 edition I already own) and have seived through the list of literary agents. It is this exact thing here that drives many people to self-publish or get their work out in alternative fashion. It really makes no sense.

No sense at all! I may consider self-publishing but my worry would be if I self-published and it wasn't a success, I've cut off other avenues. At least by sending out cover letters and partials to various agents, I'm speculating and have little to lose, except a first-class stamp and a bit of printing ink.

MNFF will be publishing 'A Porcelain Doll.' Sorry it's taken so long to let you know. We should be announcing the full list towards the end of next week. Yours is one of our definite choices :) Everyone who read it loves it. The book should be published in the autumn ready for the Christmas market so you can send your published story to your family etc. if you'd like.

(Hope this is good news to you and you're happy with the story being included. Let me know if you'd rather send it to a magazine or other anthology.)

Wahay!!! Thank you, that's really cheered me up! Of course I'm happy for it to be included, especially since the money is going to a v. good cause. I just wasn't sure, with it being quite a 'serious' short story, whether it would fit into what you guys were looking for.

:-)

And I can't wait till it's out so I can read the others!

Rah, I could have told you not to bother with buying the latest version. It's usually a waste of money to buy it every year.

Unless there's a surge in new publishers or other outlets anyway.

And as for Pity Me - it's a stupid little place in County Durham. :p

I didn't know that! I thought all writers had to stay current and uptodate with these things. Oh well, for £4 I was given a prod up the backside to do more research and begin re-editing my first three chapters.

Which I've now done. I should really begin sending things off soon. Scary stuff.
