I'm particularly fond of the blue tit and the goldfinch.
I think a bluetit might suit him best, since they're famous for eating cream from milk bottles and it's a recognisable common garden bird (the redpoll looks cute but I've never seen on...)

I've never seen a red poll either, always wanted to though. I drew upon my bird knowledge, I loved birdwatching as a kid and used to memorise bird guides XD
I like the blue tit, but it's face markings throw me, I don't know how effective he'd look in b+w and they might detract from the podginess? The goldfinch's face markings are less precise and are more block shapes of colour as opposed to fine lines.

I like the goldfinches markings too and I definitely think that would look better in black and white
