I'm actually surprised to hear you still had Woolworth's at all. They went away over here years ago. (Assuming, of course, that it's even the same company.)
I hope they will be able to keep it going through Christmas, and then the other half can start job hunting in January.
Well, Frank W brought the concept over here in 1909 and initially set up the chain, starting in (of all places) Liverpool, and spreading it out.
In the 70's all connection with the American version was cut, and it was bought out by a big consortium over here, who then ran it along with B&Q, Comet, Superdrug and some supply type companies and a couple of production companies, but then in 01 ish, we devolved to just be the Woolworths Group, and Kingfisher kept hold of all the bits that were actually making a profit...
It's been taking a bit of a dive since then, really, but with 850 stores, and over 30,000 people employed, I don't think anyone ever thought it would actually crash and burn like it did yesterday.
Fingers crossed for a relatively stress free Christmas...
