The Doomsday Machine always reminded me of the log in my grandparent's electric fireplace. (It had silver tinsel that slowly turned and was illuminated by red lights, behind a clear panel in a fake log.)

Apparently a matter-anti-matter explosion works as well as a Matrix in a pinch.
And people wonder why Unicron only shows up when Megatron's been knobbled ...
