Yeah... Jazz /isn't/ the happy positive bouncy tigger 100% of the time. In fact, there are times when he's very negative/downer. In the comic, no less. Still chirpier than half the other bots though.:) Except for Bumblebee. Bumblebee eats sugar coated sugar flakes for breakfast lunch AND dinner.
Hey if I recall correctly, Optimus and Megatron also had a light-axe and light-something which they never used before. Maybe they both tried it once and figured bare hands and big guns were the way to go.
As for being buried and not being a danger: hey after you've just been bureid in a volcano for thousands of years being inactive, that's actually a pretty logical assumption, albeit a stupid one.
Well, they use them in the second episode, so it's not all that strange that you'd never seen them before. It's a bit odder that you never see it again, but I guess the writers just decided they'd rather write different fight scenes.
I loved all the weird dohickeys that they used once and then never again. Heh. Did you see the page of Obscure Transformers, with all the gadgets and whatnot?
Also, hooray for humans being completely impotent against Transformers. That's how it should be! I don't know why the FCC considers energy weapons more acceptable than realistic guns, but they do...
Also, I liked how in one of the other episodes (wasn't it?) Rumble, usually a big mouth, is completely silent in regards to Spike. Either sloppy writing or an interesting character moment. ;)

My theory is that Prime just picked a name out of a bag once every few weeks and went with that.

And flying Autobots ... that always confused me.
