My Dad was in a care home for about a year before he died. He had alzheimers and was - to be perfectly honest - nasty. He wasn't necessarily violent with anyone (except my mum when she was still looking after him), but he was difficult, sweary and obnoxious.
The staff were fantastic.
I know what a hard job you have. Internet comments are from ignorant people who do not understand.
My granddad was in a care home for about... a year and half, two years before he died. He didn't have Alzheimers, but at 89 he was old, frail and unable to look after himself at all. (He had lived with us all my life up to that point, until my mother was unable to care for him at home anymore.) Just wanted to say that there are people out there who know how tiring, stressful and utterly unrecognised your job is. I know my family appreciated those who helped him during that time.
Okay, I am someone who is around hospitals (and by that extent, care workers) quite a bit. And although I don't live in the UK, I have never noticed any problems at all--the staff have always been fantastic even when things are hard.
I'm not so much around care homes but I can't imagine that it would be easier. I mean Nora's nurses at the house when she is entirely dysfunctional or not feeling good do get frustrated, but they are never physically injured like you say that you can be. And they still love their job and are respected.
Dementia is a horrible disease that sounds difficult to take care of and I respect that you do this and love doing this. Keep in mind that Internet comments don't mean anything in the long run and it's much more important that you love your job and care about your patients--that's what it's all about and it sucks that you don't get more recognition for that.
