I just spent the last five hours reading this fic. You broke my heart into just about a million pieces. It was achingly good. One of the best, if not the best, AU John Smith fics I've read.
This is so wonderful. Chest-crushing, but wonderful.
This is the part that really resonates with me:
“You know what the difference is between you an’ me?” Rose asked suddenly. ...
“I loved him anyway.” she said simply, miserably. “I knew he was gonna die. I was gonna have to open the watch and kill him and I still loved him anyway."Because this is it, right? This is them, right here. This is the part that has made me want to grab the Doctor and shake him about the shoulders - hard! - on more than one occasion (RTD too, for that matter
( ... )
It's never been the "will they or won't they" that's driven me crazy. It's the way the Doctor holds Rose at a distance, ultimately, because he's afraid of losing her in the end - as he inevitably will. To give up the possibility for joy, for passion, for however many minutes you can cling to with the person you love - it is such a waste. And Rose knows it - she is braver than the Doctor on this front. Would it really hurt less to deny yourself the life you wanted - and could've had - than getting to experience it and have it end?
Yes EXACTLY. That is so much what this story is about - and even the episode to a large extent. And just, well S1-4 generally. The Doctor really is a coward every time when it comes to love and I think in this circumstance it really got to a point where Rose just couldn't stand it anymore, not after she was brave enough to love John despite everything.
It is though isn't it? The overall arc, a lot of it anyway, seems to be focused on his love for Rose and how he can never reciprocate her feelings and they're going to end up without each other :( kind of depressing really. Goddammit Rusty.
This broke my heart. It's the first fic I've come across in which Rose really leaves the Doctor, and I am glad you had the courage to write this, and write it so beautifully. The fight was very well-written, and I really like the fact that Rose realises, in the end, why the Doctor couldn't love her.
Whatever RTD says, I think with the right circumstances, if he hurt her enough, Rose could have left the Doctor. It would have to have been hugely painful but it could have happened and thats why this was so interesting to explore.
God, the fight. I rewrote that about ten times to get it right :P so I'm exceedingly glad that it came across strongly.
Thank you for the review, I look forward to hearing what you think of the epilogue and THANK you for mentioning the manip :P
Ohhh please let that be the Doctor coming back for Rose, they've managed to mess things up good and proper here haven't they? I just hope they can get back to somewhere good, together and soon.
He did. Ten really is a lot more sentimental than he lets on though :P
I wouldn't say that it's impossible - just bloody hard considering the Doctor's issues with the longevity of his life versus that of his companions. Thank you so much darling for letting me know you enjoyed it :3

He waited five and a half hours for her. *sniff*
This is lovely, and so in-character for them. I love the way you dealt with the impossibility of their intimacy. Very nicely done.
