SUMMARY: Callie gets hurt…
The operation was hard on Erica. But she managed to think of Callie as just a patient. They operated on her for three hours. She had her spleen taken out, her liver sutured and she had to be administered lots of blood. Erica insisted that the best Orthopaedic surgeon operated on Callie’s arm. Her humurus was broken in two places. Though she wasn’t an expert on broken bones, she knew that the fracture was a bad one. They had to put three pins in her arm. Erica felt completely drained after the surgery. She went into the scrub room and took off her cap. She threw it in the dustbin. Suddenly she was overcome with emotions and she let herself slide to the floor. She sat down with her knees against her chest and she sobbed uncontrollably. She didn’t care that she lost control at work. She only cared about Callie and they didn’t know if Callie would make it. She had lost lots of blood. They had to administer nine units of blood. She had lost half of the amount of her blood. She couldn’t lose Callie, not now, not when she had just found happiness with her.
Suddenly she felt a presence next to her. She looked up with teary eyes and saw Mark Sloan sitting next to her.
“You shouldn’t sit on the cold floor of the scrub room, Erica. They brought Callie to the ICU. They’ll keep her in a drug induced coma for a couple of days”, Mark gently told her.
“I can’t lose her, Mark, I can’t . I love her”, Erica said between sobs.
“I know. Go freshen up and go to her.”
Erica got off the floor and walked towards the locker room. She felt the eyes of her co-workers on her.
“So far for staying unemotional at work”, she thought wryly to herself.
But she didn’t care that her co-workers had seen her emotional. She only cared about Callie at the moment and if Callie would live or not. She saw Yang at the nurse station and went to her.
“Yang, you take care of my patients. I’m taking some personal time.”
“Sure, Dr. Hahn, I’ll take excellent care of them”, Cristina said.
“Thank you, I appreciate it.”
In the locker room Erica felt how exhausted she was. She had been operating on her lover for three hours. She looked at her watch and saw that it was 4am. But she couldn’t go home to sleep, she had to stay with Callie. She just couldn’t leave her, at least not till she was sure she’d live. She took of her scrubs and stepped into the shower. The shower brought back memories of the night before, when she and Callie had showered together…
“I’m gonna take a shower. Care to join me”, Erica had asked.
“Thought you’d never ask”, Callie joked.
Erica stepped in the shower, followed by Callie. Immediately hands were everywhere. Callie kissed Erica passionately. She lowered her mouth to her neck and nibbled at Erica’s earlobe.
She kissed her neck, her collarbone and went down to her breasts.
“Oh…Callie”, Erica moaned.
Erica couldn’t think straight and had to lean against the wall for support. She felt her knees get weak.
Two fingers found the way to Erica’s center.
“You’re so wet Dr. Hahn”, Callie murmured in her ear.
“You make me so wet Dr. Torres.”
Two fingers entered Erica and she cried out.
“Caaaaallie…”
She found herself sitting on the floor of the shower. She realized the cry she had heard, was her own. She had to get her feelings back under control. She took a few deep breaths and finally managed to stop the crying. She had no idea how long she’d been in the shower. The water was cold, so she must have been in it for quite a while. She dried herself off and put another pair of scrubs on. She looked in the mirror.
“God, I’m such a mess”, she sighed.
Her eyes were swollen and red from all the crying. She looked exhausted as she hadn’t slept yet.
She got out of the locker room. She saw Richard standing at the nurse station and went to him.
“You okay, Erica?”, he asked.
She decided it was no use to lie and tell she was okay, because she looked like hell.
“No I’m not okay, but I’ll manage”, she said.
“Callie is in the ICU. She’ll be in a drug induced coma for a couple of days. She’ll be fine, Erica. She’s strong and she has someone to come back to.”
“I’ll go see her now.”
Richard nodded.
“Take all the personal time you need, Erica. Callie needs you.”
Erica entered the ICU. She never liked coming here, because if you were in the ICU, it meant you were critical. And Callie was in the ICU, so she was critical. She was glad that the nurses had closed the curtains around Callie’s bed. She picked up Callie’s chart.
“Five broken ribs, a punctured lung, a pneumothorax, double fracture of the left humurus, ruptured spleen, small rupture in liver, three fractures in the lower back L3-L4-L5”, Erica read.
“It’s a miracle you’re still alive”, she whispered.
She took a chair and went to sit beside the bed. She took Callie’s hand in her own.
“You have to get through this, Cal. I love you. There is so much we still have to do. Please, fight.”
She laid her head on the side of the bed and felt herself drift off to sleep
