new part:
Erica was sitting in her living room, thinking about the best way to handle the situation. She was already into it way over her head. She had gotten emotionally attached to a “target” before she had realized it and now it was too late. And it had only taken her two days. Her mind told her to call Max and tell him she couldn’t continue with the job, but her heart was a different matter. The only reason she still considered the mission was the fact that she wanted Jason behind bars for a very long time. And if possible not only for the drugs he was dealing and handling, but also for the abuse he had done to Callie. Her blood boiled when she remembered the things Callie had told her.

Jason was a parasite: living off other people’s money and emotions and when he had taken it all, all the money and all the feelings, he disappeared and left them devastated. She knew his kind of type; she had seen plenty of it in her field work. And she couldn’t let him destroy Callie.

She had never met someone like Callie. Not only was she beautiful, she also seemed genuine in everything she did. She had the most radiant smile, and her eyes twinkled when she smiled. Her eyes were the darkest she had ever seen and she felt drawn to them.

She didn’t know why she felt so hurt for Callie; all she wanted to do was take her in her arms and kiss the pain away…

“Damn it,” she yelled to her empty apartment.

She couldn’t be falling for Callie, could she? She had done plenty of undercover cases already and never had she fallen for one of the targets. But then again, none of the previous cases were around such a beautiful woman as Callie. Callie wasn’t only beautiful, she was also nice and caring and sweet…

“Damn it, Erica Hahn”, she slammed her fist to the table.

This would complicate the mission even more.

“Damn you Max McKinney for giving me this mission”, Erica muttered.

“Callie, where have you been?” Carlos asked her when she finally made it to the recording studio.

It wasn’t like Callie to be late for a recording. She always tried to be on time and if she was going to be late, she gave a call, but now he hadn’t heard a thing from her.

“Sorry, Carlos, I’ve been out with Erica and I lost track of time”, Callie apologized.

“No problem, but next time, give me a call so that I don’t have to worry, okay?”

Callie nodded. Carlos had known Callie for a long time and she was like a daughter to him. Recently he had noticed that something had been bothering her. Ever since she had been dating that Jason guy, he had seen a difference in her . Sometimes she seemed like a frightened little bird. He didn’t want to push her to tell him things she wasn’t ready for, but he had seen the signs and he had an idea what was going on with her.

“Erica? You haven’t mentioned her before”, Carlos inquired.

“I met her at yoga a couple of days ago, we connected immediately. She’s really nice. Even though I only just met her, it feels like I’ve known her for years.”

“That’s good, you could use a good friend”, Carlos cryptically said. “Now come on, we have some work to do.”

Callie spent the rest of the evening rehearsing new songs. It was already after 11pm when she got home. She hoped that Jason wouldn’t be there, she really wanted to be alone. But as she drove onto her driveway, she noticed his car.

“Damn”, she muttered to herself.

She got out of the car and went inside the house.

“Jason, are you here?” she called out.

She heard him slamming a door upstairs.

“Oh no, this doesn’t sound good”, she thought.

“Where the hell have you been?” he yelled to her.

She noticed that his face was red with anger and his eyes seemed glassy. She already had suspicions about him using drugs, but seeing his eyes now and his behaviour; she got confirmation of her fear.

“I’ve been at the studio, Jason, you know that”, Callie answered calmly even though her heart was hammering in her chest.

She didn’t want him to know she was afraid of him.

“I mean where have you been all afternoon, bitch?”

He came to stand mere inches from Callie. His appearance scared her. His eyes were glassy and his pupils were dilated. She even thought she saw some foam forming around his lips.

“I was out with a friend, Jason. I think I’m entitled to have friends and spend some time with them”, Callie said while trying to get away from her boyfriend.

He roughly grabbed her arm when he saw her walking away.

“I’m not done with you yet”, he angrily spat.

Callie was really frightened now. “Jason, let go of me, you are hurting me.”

She tried to get free from his grip, but he only grabbed her arm harder.

“Jason let go of me”, Callie screamed. She was panicking, she knew it, but Jason was scaring her.

He didn’t let her go, so she did the only thing she could think of, she kicked him as hard as she could in the groin. He screamed out in pain and let go of her arm.

She scrambled out of the house to her car. Jason wasn’t following her. She had kicked him pretty hard and he probably wouldn’t get up anytime soon. She drove to the only person who she knew could help her.

Knock knock….

Erica was reading a book when she heard the pounding on the door. She had no idea who it could be, but it sounded urgent. Just to be safe, she took her gun out of the holster and held it in her hand. She slowly opened the front door. A dishevelled looking Callie was standing on her doorstep. Something must have happened because she looked panic stricken.

“Callie, what happened?” Erica asked while opening the door.

Suddenly it struck her that she was still holding her gun. Shit.

“I’m sorry to bother you, but he, he….”, Callie started but she couldn’t finish. She started sobbing uncontrollably.

Callie looked at Erica through tear stricken eyes. Suddenly she noticed the gun in Erica’s hand.

“Oh my god, you have a gun”, she panicked.

“I can explain and I will explain. Now sit down, let me put my gun away first”, Erica said.

“Shit”, she thought, “how the hell am I gonna explain the gun to Callie? Stupid, Erica; that was stupid to take the gun with me to open the door. But then again, I had no idea it would be Callie.”

She put the gun away and went to sit next to Callie. Her heart went out to the woman sitting next to her. Something bad must have happened.

“Callie, what happened?” she softly asked.

“He… he was so violent”, she started.

“Jason?”

Callie nodded. “Yes, he grabbed my arm and didn’t want to let go. I kicked him in the groin. I didn’t know where else to go, Erica.”

Callie started sobbing again and Erica pulled her in a hug. That bastard had done this to her. It determined her even more to put him behind bars and rather yesterday than tomorrow. She said soothing words to her and after a while Callie calmed.

“Show me you arm, Callie.”

Callie took off her sweater. Her left arm was heavily bruised and showed the handprint of Jason’s hand.

“Does he know where you are?”

“No.”

“Good, you are staying here for tonight. I don’t want you anywhere near him. Why did he do this to you?”

“He wanted to know where I had been all day. I told him I was out with a friend. He wasn’t normal Erica… he was stoned. His eyes were glassy and his pupils were dilated. He’s doing drugs Erica, drugs…” Callie cried.

“Ssshhh, calm down Callie, everything will be alright.”

They continued hugging each other for a bit longer until Callie had calmed enough.

“I’ll find you something to sleep in. You can take my bed, I’ll sleep on the couch”, Erica said while extracting herself from Callie.

Callie didn’t respond; she just stared to the wall in front of her. She knew Jason had a temper, but she had never expected it to be like this. Had she really been this blind? And how long had he been doing drugs? She had had suspicions about drug use, but tonight was the first time she saw any evidence of it. Her boyfriend was a junkie. She had done several commercials against drug use and her own boyfriend was a junkie.

“He’s a junkie, Erica, I’m a 100% against drugs and my boyfriend is a junkie”, she cried.

“I know, sweetie. We’ll talk more tomorrow. Let’s get some sleep first”, Erica softly said while handing Callie a pair of sweats and a T-shirt, “you can change in the bathroom.”

Callie took the clothes and went to the bathroom to change. “Thanks.”

“No problem.”

Erica sat down on the couch. So Jason was a drug user. That was no surprise to Erica as she had read it in the file. But the events of this evening endangered her mission. He had hurt Callie, physically and emotionally, and she couldn’t let that happen again. But she needed Callie and Jason to be together to get the information she needed. This was such a mess. She couldn’t tell Callie to stay with Jason because the FBI needed them to be together for her mission.

Callie got out of the bathroom looking fragile and vulnerable.

“Erica, I know we just met, but could you… I don’t want to be alone tonight”, Callie whispered, “could you hold me in bed?”

“Sure, let me brush my teeth and I’ll be right there”, Erica said while guiding Callie to the bedroom.

“Hold her in bed, that should be fun”, Erica mused, “god, this is gonna be pure torture. The woman was just assaulted by her boyfriend and I’m having lustful thoughts about her. This is gonna be a long night.”

Erica found Callie crying.

“It’s okay, Callie; it will be okay. I won’t let him harm you”, she whispered in her ears while pulling her closer and holding her.

She felt Callie relax instantly in her arms. Callie entwined their fingers. Before both realized they had fallen asleep.
