1. Who do you consider to be the most tragic artist, and why?

2. How many stars would you give the movie Shaun of the Dead?

3. Where would you like to spend the summer, wandering aimlessly without worrying about money or anything other than existing in that case? (be as specific or abstract as you would like)

list, personal, movies, academic, questions

1) Vincent van Gogh. Have you ever heard Don McLean's "Starry Starry Night"?

2) Three.

3) Kyoto. The old, temple-riddled district of Kyoto.

1. I don't know about most tragic, but I'd go with anyone who died before their time. Paganini, John Toole, even Jimi Hendrix, if you'd count that as art. I like the Wikipedia entry for Paganini:

As he became more and more famous, it was rumored that he acquired his incredible virtuosity in a pact with the Devil. His eyes would roll into the back of his head while playing, revealing the whites. His swaying stance, long unruly hair and thin, gaunt stature only added to this rumor. He played so intensely, women would faint and men would break out weeping.

2. Like, a million.

3. South America. Or Africa. Or Australia. I can't think of anywhere I don't want to go, really. I think my next conquest will be central Asia, though - I don't know why, but I'm completely fascinated by places that end in -stan. The whole nomadic past and being in the middle of nowhere thing gets me somehow.

1. I think the most tragic artist is probably Oscar Wilde. His fall from grace was so immense and humbling. He was the greatest wit of his age, a darling of Victorian high society, a man of high standing... And it all came crashing down at his feet. He wandered the Continent for years alone under an assumed name, lost his family, friends, health, and died young with no one beside him to assure him the comforts of the next world. I really don't know enough about history or great artists to make a more informed decision than that...

2. I haven't seen it, so I'll give it a preemptive 5.

3. Absolutely Kyoto, Japan. I love Kyoto... I could go temple-hopping for next to nothing, or, if I had money, I could go shopping. Either way, the place is just too beautiful and charming to be uncomfortable. I love Kyoto. I love it immensely.

1) Archimedes - yes, I am very much willing to consider mathematics art! - killed by a Roman soldier for no crime more serious than not wanting to abandon his work. I've never had a very high opinion of the Roman Empire since learning of that story.

2) Oh noez, I have never seen it! I feel so B-movie illiterate. ToT

3) Setting aside the general truth that my prefered summer destination is CLV, I'd like to hike the 88-Temple Kobo Daishi pilgrimage route in Shikoku. I haven't been yet, so I don't know how entertaining that is, but if I got bored, I guess I could just return to Tokyo and goof off there for the rest of the summer. XD
