I remember checking the clock in music class. Our teacher tended to keep us in till the very last second before letting us clean up, so there always was the risk of being late for the next class.
For math courses, there are assignments along the way. For some science courses, there are lab quizzes/reports and lab exams. A few may come with essays. But overall, compared to arts courses especially, there isn't as much evaluated work along the way. So it's up to the individual to keep up with understanding the material.
Trying doesn't hurt! Yeah, usually (fast food) restaurants, grocery stores, clothing stores etc are good choices.
