You know, every year I swear I'm going to be better prepared for
14valentines so that I can actually do something relevant to the daily theme and every year I just FAIL at that. Le sigh. /0\
At any rate, today is Day 1:
Body Image. And today I am going to tell you all about the DC comic title that you should be reading when it starts being published for realz in April. SEPTEMBER? Really DC, REALLY? /0\
This is Kate Kane. She is Batwoman. (Incidentally enough, the gentleman standing in the background is her father, who is pretty much her Alfred. I LOVE Kate's relationship with her dad, so much.)
Kate was in the military, before getting kicked out due to DADT (There is some awesome
commentary, by the author and creator of Batwoman, but GOD does that scene pack a powerful punch in context. &KATE;)
After being kicked out the military, Kate wanders about aimlessly, unsure what to do with her life, until Batman swoops in mere seconds after she kicks a mugger's ass in a dark alley. It is at this point that she decides to take up the mantle of The Bat and wear it with honor, no matter if she's sanctioned to do so or not.
This is Kate's training montage, which I include both because I ♥ training montages and because her dad is almost as awesome as she is. *g* (Kate, like most superheroes, is motivated by a tragic back story, because not only does she get kicked out of the military, family backstory involves a tragedy that ends with both her mother and her sister dead. ALSO awesome powerful scenes to read in context.)
Kate ALSO is suave, and picks up cops in her spare time. (This is a line that SHOULD NOT WORK. And yet, because she is Kate, it DOES. &her;)
Kate and Renee are SO FUCKING CUTE when they are together (and, like,
REALLY HOT together too) but they are not currently together! However, rumor has it that Kate is getting another girlfriend in the series and one can only hope that this means that this means that Renee will ALSO be getting a new girlfriend and they can go on double dates and shit. What? I never said my desires for this series were realistic or anything! *g*
And I am ending this spam by giving you the gift of
Batwoman: Elegy (also includes Batwoman #0 from November) as an enticement to tell you to go and buy the series once it starts up for real in April. Kate Kane is AWESOME and the things I've heard about the new creative team (Greg Rucka left DC, but the artist from Elegy is still on board) are so encouraging and I'd love for this to STAY an awesome title that comes out every month.
