So what about the giant monkey story part? Worth seeing? For a second I thought you were gonna give me a review!

for the pure spectacle of it i think it's worth seeing on the big screen. all the bits with dinosaurs and insects and king kong are good clean fun, in the case of the insects somewhat disgusting fun. king kong meets nyc is less spectacular but still entertaining.

my friend's dad was telling me about that book at a dinner party about 2 or so years ago! it sounds interesting.

i'm scared to see king kong.

the one thing i dislike is how it's still about "discovery" - how the chinese were first (or the spanish, or whomever) but not that it was found first by the first peoples and was already home to people before mass genocide was committed by europeans.

how can you "discover" a place already inhabited by human beings for centuries?

yeah! the idea from history class so long ago that the chinese had the technology to go exploring and they did but then they sort of decided, meh, let's not take over other people's lands and went back home was always amazing to me.

unless you really like big big action CGI dinosaurs and monkeys, there's not really a need to see it. unless you want to be angry about more stuff hehe.

I always thought the Maori discovered New Zealand? eve_l_incarnata January 17 2006, 20:34:50 UTC
PBS had a special on recently about Admiral Zheng, I think. Unfortunately, I missed it. Before the book came out, I have vague memories of hearing about Chinese explorers long before Columbus. Now I want to read the book! I'm all for Columbus Day being done away with.

Your commentary on King Kong made me laugh.

wow i haven't watched pbs in forever. i hadn't heard about the chinese exploring north america prior to today, although i did know they tried their hand at exploration before deciding that hey, home is where the heart is. hehe.

yeah, it takes a few days for the rage to sublimate into DRY WIT. but there it is!
