I have the hong-kong bootleg DVD at my house. Great movie. I read the Globe review today, and they said it was pg13 violent, but not too violent. My copy has a beheading in the first 5 minutes, and several sudden, involuntary, non-medically necessasary amputations. So I wonder if the cinema release has been cut.
Many of the scenes are allusions to famous western films. I really enjoyed noticing them. The hatchet gang in your photo is visually similar to the big brawl with the agent smith clones in the matrix. There's a 'Godfather' reference in there, silence of the lambs, the shining, others.
I watched it with my wife and sister in law. They were in hysterics over the 'Angry Chinese Mom' gags, and suprisingly, the 'repeatedly accidently struck with thrown knives' gag.
oh nooooooo, they better not have cut bits!!!! i was talking about this movie with a friend last night and he was explaining his reluctance to go see it because it seemed too cartoony but that's almost partly why i want to see it - i bring this up in relation to the burly brawl reference - i didn't really buy matrix reloaded's burly brawl - it didn't come off as realistic "enough" and the fact that it took itself so seriously made it even worse, whereas here it appears as though kung fu hustle makes absolutely no pretense towards seriousness so i can wholly accept cartoony effects - nay, appreciate and cherish them!
you sir, would look perfectly capital in a top hat!
It is cartoony, but still satisfying. Matrix used CGI to imitate reality. That's why noticing the CGI makes the scene less satisfying. KFH uses CGI to imitate cartoons (quite literally in one 'Road Runner' sequence, another film quote). The CGI imitates reality to signify danger, and imitates cartoons to signify something that's a joke.
oh! it wasn't engrossing enough to watch all at once? that's not promising!
in fairness i don't think it's at all comparable to something like hero though - hero is all seriousness and drama and pure focus on aesthetics, while as far as i can gather from the previews, kung fu hustle is all about entertainment and humor and teh funny.

I wish top hats would come back into style.
